I found some ammo cans with i think 840 rounds of SS109 (green tip) on stripper clips, 10 rounds on a clip 3 clips per cardboard sleeve, each bandolier has 4 pockets for 120 rounds per bandolier. They have the LC mark and the Nato Circle cross head stamp. Any one know anything about this stuff?

the ammo goes for $200 per thousand. one bandolier, 12 stripper clips, 4 cardboards,1 charger,and one saftey pin goes for $3 each set.

It says LC 91. Does that mean it was made in 1991?

Yep. Unless it was stored in awful conditions, it should be just fine. I wouldn't use it for defense use, being that old, but even so, the odds of a bad round are pretty small.

Sounds like genuine M855 ball packed for Mil use. Should be great if it has been sealed ini the can all this time. Where did you find this? You never see it still packed in bando's, but since it is dated 91 then I guess it's possible. Good find, may I aask how much you got and how much you paid? just curious.

Long story short, my grandfather died, and my grandmother wanted me to come by and clear out his "gun stuff" I found 20 cans of this green tip, all sealed in cans that look like they havent even been opened.

Just got back from shooting it. Put about 90 rounds through my carbine. Shot just fine, no problems at all. Seems to be fairly hot. What grain bullet is it? And since its green tip is it steel core? Neat thing about the bandoliers is that each one comes with its own charger for the mags!! What is the black saftey pin for? Its stuck on the end of each individual bandolier.

62 grain steel core. the saftey pin is to attatch the charger to the bandolier.

Thanks! Whats the difference between M855 and SS109? I thought green tip was SS109? But this stuff is marked M855 on the bandoliers.

I just bought some of this stuff locally. A local shop has it for $22 per 120 pack just like you described it. It comes with the stripper clips and the green bandolier. Shoots pretty good so far.

m855 and ss109 are the same. we call it m855 and most of nato calls it ss109

SS109 is the NATO spec, but we use the M855 spec, which is more stringent. (specifies a minimum velocity). The US uses the green tip to denote the SS109/M855, and yes, it has a partial steel core. (a steel cone in the tip, backed up by a lead base).

You can also use the black safety pin to shorten up the bandolier strap, so it rides better on your shoulder/chest.

M855 actually has a stricter spec, but is within ss109 specs.

Dude, keep that ammo. You're not going to do better than Lake City USGI in bandoliers. 16000 rounds isn't THAT much. Look at it this way, you can set aside a couple of thousand rounds for a SHTF stash and still have enough to practice with for the next 4 or 5 years.

Besides, it's your family heritage. Your Grandfather obviously believed in firearms and preparedness (No one keeps 16000 rounds of USGI 5.56 on hand for deer season). Keep it in the family, use that ammo to develop and build your shooting skills as a way of honoring him and keeping his memory. Don't just try and cash in on it.

Seriously, it's your family legacy. Your Grandfather must have been a pretty cool guy. Never sell the family treasures, and if 16000 rounds of USGI 5.56 isn't a treasure, I don't know what is.

I agree, no way i would sell it, or any of his other stuff. I just wanted to know if it was what it appeared to be. How does military issue gear end up in the garage of an 89 year old man. If i go by the dates on the cans it makes him at least 75 or so when the ammo was made. He only had 1 AR, and its the only thing in .223 he has. He must have came across a hell of a deal to pick up this much.

He might have stocked up before The Gov. was forbiden to surplus to the civilian market. My guess he was no fan of Slick Willy.

+2 (or 3 or whatever we're at). If I were you, I'd keep/use it. Decide how many unopened cans you want to keep around for SHTF, use up the rest at the range as you need to. Good stuff, sorry it had to come at such a price though.

I already have plenty of wolf stocked up. I will just shoot it at the range and stash these away. He also had some smoke grenades (the type with the spoon and pull pin) still in thier cardboard packing containers that look like beer cans. We had some units around here get called up for Desert Storm and thats right about when this ammo was made, I bet one of his old buddies (he was in the Corps during WW2) hooked him up.
