The best answer is that it might. You will likely need to try it and see if the rounds keyhole or not. I had to try this recently with several "identical" 9 twist barrels. All shot 68-69 gr fine. Two shot 75 gr okay, one did not. Bullets went into the targets sideways at 10 yards. One of the two that worked with 75s also worked with 77 SMKs, the other did not. When they keyhole, I believe they start tumbling right out of the barrel, so I don't think you would see stabilization out to a certain range, then losing it after that (except at the supersonic/subsonic break).

Paul gave it to you exactly right. YOUR 1/9 barrel may stabalize 75/77 gr bullets and it may not. I have one 20" 1/9 that sprays 75 gr. Horny's around like a buckshot pattern but will put 77 gr. SMK's into 1/2 MOA all day long.
Only one way to find out. Buy some of each and head to the range. Luck, SD |

Depends on the barrel - buy a box and try it out. All my 1:9s stabilize the 75gr Hornady OTM to 100y minimum (14.5", 16" and 20"). |

All I can say is wow!
Thank you for your honest and informative posts. You guys rock. I will test these loads 65+ grain, starting from short range and move the range out to see when they keyhole. I think the whole 75-77 grain load thing is a fad, in that it is like splitting hairs when it comes to defense. It isn't as if 55-62 grain so ineffective to demand a move up to these. But if they do offer more, more is always better, so it is worth a try. I do not feel undergunned with 55-62 grain 223 in any bullet that will fragment or expand. I like having choices. |

The 75 grain Hornady bullets are the most accurate that I have shot through my 16inch barreled 1/9 twist Colt AR. However, I have only shot them at about 100 meters and it was on a 60 degree day. They shot into around an inch at that range.

I haven't read much about it. What I meant was, a regular .223 isn't something to sneeze at. In other words, I wouldn't feel undergunned at all.
Like I said, if these do put out that high of a % extra, more IS better. |

If you get stability out to 150 meters or so, use 75 or 77, every time. The extra effectiveness is cheap. |

Hornady 75's are the heaviest bullet that shoots well in my 1/9 Bushy 20". My theory is the Hornady 75 gr HP is softer or larger diameter. Either trait would increase engagement with the barrel lands. The bullets have to engage the rifling to get the full value of twist out of the barrel.
A bullet that tumbles through the paper at 10 yards must be bouncing down the barrel. Are you sure it wasn't loaded backwards? |

My 20" 1:9 could stabilize well at 200 meters. |
