I bought 200 rounds of DAG .308 surplus belted ammo (DAG is NATO German).  I bought this ammo because DAG .308 has well known superior fragmentation properties that  will permanently incapacitate an aggressor.

I thought it would be easy to remove the ammo links, but I am having trouble figuring out how to do so without damaging the brass.

Does anyone know of a way to de-link the ammo safely and without damage to the casings?

Grab the belt with your left hand, pull the rds out individually with your right hand. It's easy man, just pull real hard on the brass and yank them out the back of the links.

Heaven forbid, an MG-74 will do a much nicer job.

I held the belt with one hand, and used a stripper clip in the other to pull the cases rearward and out of the clips.  I was not very enthusisastic after the first belt of 50...   HTH.

I got some radway green that was belted in 4 round pieces.  I took an empty .308 case, slipped it over the bullet, and pushed it out the back of the clip.  You can also put the open end of the case on the back side of the belted case and push out the front.

Thanks for the responses guys!  I was able to do it  using Paladin's stripper clip method.

It took a good deal of yanking--The casings were on pretty tight.

I knew I could get good advice from the ARFCOM advisory committee!

Guess I will try "the method" with a belt of 800+ rds of  M855 and tracers I'm currently looking at still in ammo box.

if the links are similar to what surplus US belted .30-06 comes on twist the ammo as you pull it off, and twist the whole belt a little as you do it and it will loosen right up.
kind of hard to explain the part about twisting the belt. twist isn't really the best word to use
I had a hell of a time with the first 30 or so rounds until I found the technique, then it was a breeze. I also wore leather shooting gloves to make it a little easier on my fingers

I find the M-60 or M-240 to be the most fun way of d-linking ammo. :D

Try a 1ft long 2x4 board and an old metal fork.  Place the linked rounds bullet down on the wood, press the fork between the rounds and push downward.

Damn near everything.  Worst POS the military ever adopted since the Chauchat.

Now this is something I'd not heard before!  Where might this inquiring mind go to further explore this fertile ground of military procurement at its most typical?

I talked to an ex-nam era SEAL who was a 60 gunner and said he loved the thing. Fairly few problems even after slogging along the deltas and other crap.

I've got around 750 rounds of this DAG ammo on the belts and I by and large leave it like that until I need to strip some rounds off for loading.

I push the round forward slightly to make the cartridge unseat it's rim from the little nipple on the belt link, then I turn the cartridge 90 degrees inside the link and rotate it right out.

Doesn't take very long to snap loose 5-10 of the things to load into a magazine.

Haven't had the ammo on hand long enough to really test it out, I have a bunch of Aussie surplus that I use for now and that stuff is doing really well.     The DAG stuff is likely to sit around for awhile before I get to it.

Will likely stock pile the last 200 rounds of it when I get to that point, same with the 200 round battle pack of Hirt that I still have laying around.    Just wish I could have bought more Hirt back when it was cheap.

How to delink ammo relatively fast and easy:

You need:

- leather work/gardening gloves
- A small piece of wood, like a 6" length of 2x4.

Put the gloves on, and (if you're right-handed), grab the belt with your right hand, and place the very end bullet tip-down against the wood.  Your hand should be wrapped around the top of the belt, so that the round at the end of the belt is between your thumb and forefinger, and your hand/index finger are holding the 2nd-to-last round on the belt.  Simply push down on the belt, which pushes the end-round into the board (the bullet will make a dent in the wood, which is fine), and the round will pop out.  Using your left hand, pull the belt forward one round, and repeat.  Do this sitting in a chair with a cardboard box in front of you to catch the loose rounds.

I can delink a 100-round belt in about 2 minutes this way.

YOU MUST WEAR THE GLOVES, though, or your hand will be pinched and torn up by the links.

This is what I did, without the gloves though.  Kinda hard with 308, delinking 50 is easy.

In my own newspaper wetpack tests the Portuguese 7.62 fragments similar to the German DAG I had. Both rounds looked exactly like those shown on the M80/DAG comparison photos.

what makes the DAG fragment so nicely is the thin copper jacket.
Now that you have some, it should be a simple matter to pull a bullet from each of your stockpile and cut the bellet to compate jacket thickness.
I bet you'd be surprised how similar Aussie and South African jackets are to the DAG . . .

I will try eclipse's and Troy's method with my next ammo belt.  Excellent ideas gents!  BTW wear a thick glove to make it easier on your fingers (as has been suggested by several folks)

The m60 got my uncle thru nam in one piece. The only thing he didnt like about it was when he was told to carry a couple extra barrels. Then he knew it was going to be a slugfest.
