My rifles are all 1/9 twist, and I notice that Wolf 62 grain is more accurate in my rifles than Wolf 55 grain.  I use XM193 as my go-to ammo, but it's not all that accurate.

I would like to try a better brand of 62 grain bullet in a 5.56-type load.  Something with a SS-109 or similar bullet, or similar to M855.  Ideally, I'm looking for something in the Lake City XM193 price range or a little more.  I don't want typical gun store hunting or target ammo.

Does Federal or Winchester make anything like this?  I have heard enough foreign ammo horror stories that I don't want mongrel foreign milsurp.

Am I asking too much?

Wow.

I'd like to buy less than 1,000 rounds.  I don't want to buy bulkwhen I don't know how well it'll work, or if it will really be more accurate than XM193.

Can I buy a few hundred rounds of this somewhere?

Check out the Hotshot brand of SS109, pretty good stuff and can be found pretty easily.

I've had great results accuracy-wise with Winchester WB 62gr in my 1x9 DPMS, and another member recently reported similar results with Federal AE 62 gr in his 1x9.

Neither are SS109, but they are not much more expensive than XM193, and MV is only a tad less  than M855. BC of about .28 versus .24 for M193 and .30 for M855.

Only other non-mil SS109 rd I am aware of besides HotShot is made by Sellier & Bellot. I believe Natchez carries it.

Thanks, this is all great info.  I'm going to the Greensboro gun show tomorrow and I'll be looking for a few boxes.

Got 4 boxes of Sellier&Bellot (Czech) and 2 boxes of Hotshot (Bosnian).  If it seems to offer better accuracy in my guns, I'll go for a big batch next time.  Thanks for all the advice.

Would greatly appreciate a range report.

Have only shot a box of HotShot, and it is not readily available for me locally.

Also I have never shot the S&B SS109 and am curious. I have used their M193 rd with good results, but none of my local dealers carry S&B .223 on a regular basis, and mail/internet order is out for me due to delivery issues.

BTW, went to the range today. First shot out of my 1x9 DPMS A2 at 100 yds with a 3-9 x 40 scope and Win WB 62 gr went right into the center of a 12" Dirty Bird. When I checked the spotting scope, thought I had missed the target entirely, then spotted the hole right in the center spot, and let out an expletive.

Switched over to another Dirty Bird and put 4 rds into the center circle in two pairs of back-to-belly holes, one pair right at the 4 o'clock edge of the center spot. Fifth rd was a flier, should have stopped when I was ahead. Oh well, have one wall trophy anyway.

Also shot FAE 55, XM193, Q3131A, and XM855. Best results were with the Win 62.

Now considering three additional choices: FAE 62, S&B SS109 & HotShot SS109.
