Any good? I know that UMC loads popular calibers is bulk and sells for cheap so I bought 10 boxes @ $2.88 today. I figured if it was any good I'd just go get some more. OTOH I just noticed WH sale....

It's just a kind of generic 223 ammo, probably a mild load and won't win any accuracy points,  but good for plinking.

It's great plinking ammo!  Especially if you reload.  It's not loaded very hot so the brass doesn't need to be trimmed.

I like to buy it when I need to rotate some more brass into my reloading mix.

My Mini 14 absolutely Hates it , shoots it about 5 to 8 inches at 100 yds. While it will shoot 1982 made Malaysian Milsurp at 1.5 inches all day long at 100 yds. (The Malaysian being 5.56 instead of .223)

My BM 20" HBAR doesn't like UMC either.  Had quite a few feeding and ejection problems with it.  I actually use Wolf for general plinkage.  It's also a little underpowered but works well in my gun.  I use Q3131A and Fed XM193 for serious shooting.  Just my preference, go with what works for you.

Spiffy 3, I read somewhere that mini 14's actually have a 5.56 chamber.  (little different than a .223)  Do you understand it that way also?  Might be why they don't shoot so well and the 5.56 does.

Mini's have a .223 chamber, not a 5.56mm.  You are right, but you have it backwards.

My Mini 14 has a 5.56 chamber.
The manual says it is chambered for 5.56 ammo.

I got a bunch of that UMC @ Bass Pro.  Fired some through my 20" gov't profile AR and it did just fine.  A little light, but low flash and accurate.  XM193 or Q3131A is better serious stuff, but the UMC is great cheap range ammo.  Also used some to break in my RRA NM, seemed to do fine.

Yes i have heard before that even though the Mini is stamped .223 on the receiver it is actually chambered for 5.56, mine definately loves 5.56 ammo better than .223., .223 shoots very crappy in it , i also get very good accuracy from the 62 grain Israeli ss109, very tight group out of the Mini with this ammo.

The overwhealming majority of Mini-14's have a 5.56mm chamber.  I do believe there are a few out there from years ago that have .223 chambers.

I love the UMC 55 gr stuff. It's what I shoot every month on our FDCC shoots. I find it to be pretty darn accurate, and all of my ARs love it.

Hmmm.  I don't have the Manual to mine handy but mine is stamped ".223 Cal"

I haven't shot it in years because the thing is a bitch to clean and the accuracy is miserable compared to an AR.

Markm,

My Mini is also stamped "Cal .223"
After looking at the manual more closely, I still don't know what it is actually chambered for.

Here's what it says" (AMMUNITION-The Mini-14 Rifle is designed to use either U.S.Military or commercial sporting .223 (5.56)caliber cartridges manufactured in accordance with U.S.industry practice.)

This applies to rifles with the prefix numbers 181 thru 184.

Also in the tech data specs it says: (standard US Military ball or commercial cartridges)

So I don't really know for sure.

I read somewhere, I think it was that magazine police something, I forget, I think i have the article.  I'll look for it.  But if I'm remembering correctly the author said the only 3 guns he knew that were chambered for 5.56 were the ar-15, the mini-14, and the ruger single shot. Model .... whatever it is.  Model 1? I forget.
