Even though this upper is chambered as "5.56 NATO 1/9" is it safe to shoot 5.56 ammo through it?  I have recently read that even though the barrels may be marked as such that they are supposed to be used with .223.  What do you think of this?  I am currently shooting Federal Xm193 55gr. 5.56mm.  It seems kinda hot when compared to 55gr Winchester stuff.

Thanks for the info.

I'm sure somebody will bitch slap me if I'm wrong, but here goes:

Being as though the case sits in the barrel extension...  the barrel extension is pretty much part of the barrel itself...  I would venture to say the 5.56 markings on the barrel are telling you that 5.56 ammo is the stuff to use.

Slap Away!

Thanks for the replies.  As you can tell I am new to shooting AR's.  I just wanted to be safe.  I had recently read through the ammo FAQ and found it very informative.  What I can't believe is people are buying barrels labeled as 5.56 but being told by the manufacturer only to shoot .223 through it.  What gives?

I got one right.  Woo Hoo!

Which manufacturers are saying to only use .223?

I'm not sure but I think it was DPMS.  I actually read it here on this forum.  Someone had purchased a new AR that had a barrel marked 5.56 and when they contacted the manufacturer about suggested ammo the manufacturer told him to use only .223.  Sounds fishy to me.

I would erase that statement from your brain.

Yeah,  I thought it sounded kinda' strange.  The M193 I'm shooting now seems noticeably hotter than the 55gr Winchester .223 I was previously shooting.

Good Lord, this is a crazy thread.  You can shoot both 5.56 and .223 out of your Bushmaster.  Email Bushmaster and ask them.  They built the weapon and they are the experts.  As this has been done in the past over and over agian, I have a good idea on what the answer will be.  Still, don't trust some internet board.  Email the source and sleep well at night.

When you receive the reply from the OEM, be kind and share the email on this board.

my two cents, if it's stamped 5.56 on the barrel let her rip.  my colt handbook don't say 5.56, it says .223 but the barrel is 5.56 so in my opinion, you can shoot both safely. jj

I have 2 16" bushys both say 5.56 on the barrel and I have fired 223 and 5.56 through them.5.56 is my favorite though, loaded hotter(fed xm193) and cheaper.
