A grenade firing blank is much more powerful, as it needs to move a relatively huge mass quite a distance. Using a standard blank to fire a grenade would probably send the grenade about 10 feet. In fact, I remember a story of a guy who thought he'd shoot a home-made incindiery grenade from his rifle over his house into a field, but he used a standard blank, and ended up setting his own roof on fire. DOH!

I have also read that while the grenade blanks have more powder, it is slower burning than standard blanks and as a result grenade blanks don't produce as high of a pressure spike. That said, there was a guy who had posted on another forum his experiences with firing dummy/training rifle grenades with standard blanks in a FR-8. Said that the kick was low enough he could fire the grenades from the shoulder and that they would go about 50 yds or so.
One other thing is that different countries produce both standard and grenade blanks with differing levels of pressure. I don't believe there are stanag/nato specs on this sort of ammunition. |
