i recently built my first ar-15, a BM m4
the barrel says that it is chambered for 5.56, does that mean that i can shoot .223 also? or should i just stick to 5.56? thanks

If you have a 5.56 chamber you can shoot both 5.56 and 223.  If you have a 223 SAAMI  chamber you can only shoot 223.

I would check out www.ammo-oracle.com  for all you need to know about ammo.

It's not entirely true that if you have a SAAMI chamber that you cannot shoot 5.56.  You can shoot it, but it's not recommended because of the higher CUP and accuracy loss.  Shooting 5.56 out of a SAAMI .223 spec chamber can be dangerous.

Yes, if you have a 5.56 chamber you can shoot either mil-spec or commercial loads through it. You can also shoot mil-spec through a commercial chamber, but you may experience extraction problems. So long as the gun doesn't have a really tight match chamber, I don't think there is much danger of it blowing up on you.
