Q3131 isn't made anymore. It was really Lake City M193 with a different headstamp, made back when Winchester/Olin had the contract to operate Lake City. The last batches (some of which had over-pressure problems, BTW) were made in '99. Note that Alliant TechSystems took over operation of Lake City in 2000, and their Federal Cartridge subdivision actually runs the plant. Federal now sells Lake City M193 as "Federal XM193."
Q3131A is really IMI M193. Winchester contracted with IMI to make it in '98, when they knew they would be losing the LC contract and they knew that demand for ammo would rise during the Y2K scare. -Troy |

I have some Winchester Q3131, Q3131a, and some PMC 223a. What should I keep for SHTF, and what should I use for practice ammo, or is there not really any meaningful difference between them?

If the PMC is 98 or older, it's M193-spec. If it's 99 or newer, it's downloaded to .223 specs.
If you can't afford to use M193 for practice, fine, store it and use the lighter loads at the range. Just make sure you sight in with M193 and don't adjust at the range, because if you really NEED your rifle, you'll want it sighted in with your carry ammo. -Troy |

Troy - The PMC boxes don't have a date. Is there another way I can tell when they were made? The box has "PMC Ammunition, 223 REM, 55Gr FMJ-BT, Mod 223A, Made in R.O. Korea". Does this sound like 223 specific ammo, as opposed to M193 spec? If it's not M193, then I'll probably use it first before the 3131/3131a. TIA!

I fired Winchester Q3131A this weekend for the first time (bought 1000 rounds from Wholesalehuneter for $175 delivered) and all I have to say is DAMN! This shit is hot! Good groups but the muzzle flash was off the charts. It definately got my attention and the attention of the shooters around me. The Malaysian, South African and Portugese M193 barely even registered a flash but the Q3131A and Federal XM193 were awesome.

I have shot the Q3131 All the time. I still have some on hand thats collecting dust.
As long if the Q3131 was stored right I would buy it! I still think the Q3131 is just a few FPS Faster than Q3131A/IMI! |
