Hi All-

I have an AR10A2 carbine that I intend to hunt deer and of course plink with. I'd appreciate any recommendations for ammo manufacturer and bullet weight and type for each of these applications.

TIA

Sportsmansguide.com has .308 Nato 200 battle packs for under $30.00 each.  Perfect for target/practice.

I bought two last week, and the ammo is in great condition.  It's 70's/80's production portugal ammo.  I'm gonna try to blast some tomorrow.

I have a Remington 700 VLS.  With the Port NATO surplus, I can shoot sub MOA all day long.  For 15 cents per shot, this stuff is great.  Save the $30/box stuff for when you want to take Bambi down.

Enjoy your AR-10.  I need one too! [;)]

I just learned that the Port NATO has a mild steel jacket that is copper washed.

Now I'm affraid it will put excess wear on my BORE, God Damn you!

It isn't copper washed.  An example of a copper washed surface would be the steel case on Wolf 7.62x54.  That plate is only a few atoms thick.   The Port. bullet has a thick copper plate over thin steel.  You need to dig hard and deep with a knife to get to the steel.  Shoot a round and recover the bullet.  You will see no steel showing.

If I owned an AR-10, I would use Port surplus in a heartbeat.  You can't beat it at 15cent/shot.  I can't reload for that. [:o]

I got 2000 rounds of Port for my FAL and M1A.  Great stuff.  I'll buy more when it is back in stock.

Won't run it in my AR10 though.  Course, it is an AR10T.  I run only Fed Gold Medal Match.  In process of setting up to reload 308 though to improve on that.

Still, I'm not reloading for the battle rifles.  They can eat Port.

The Port 308 ammunition that is stamped FNM has a brass case, lead core and a "mild" steel jacket that is copper washed.

I have the exact same product in my hands right now.  It is nice thick layer of copper plated over steel.  I would never refer to that type of surface as "washed" as that would imply a very light surface coat offering little more than corrosion protection.

Right On!  I thought I had 400 rounds of useless ammo.  I'm gonna go burn some up tomorrow.

Thanks, guys!

If I am reading and interpreting this all correctly, I am to understand that *Port* is OK for my AR10A2 carbine because it is not remanufactured and has *no* bad components, ie. "copper wash plating over steel, no steel or lacquer components" that would invalidate my warrantee - BUTT, if I had a *match* configured rifle I would be better served with the *good* stuff, ie. Winchester, Remington, etc. *Match* ammo double to quadruple the rupees in price? Correct???

Thank you - I appreciate the insights.

I use Brit Radway Green. I believe it has copper jacketing as opposed to plating.

South African is good stuff, too. Copper jacket with NO steel, at least I've never found any steel jackets in the stuff I've bought. It's a little scarce right now, but there should be more imported before too long. At least that's what my ammo dealer is telling me.

All of what he actually told me:

The South African company that was doing the exporting saw how well their stuff was selling, so they wanted to renegotiate their contract. To raise prices some, of course! He said to expect more to start showing up sometime in June. This is both the 5.56mm/.223 and 7.62mm/.308 stuff.

The great Hert. that was available for a while had the same "mild" steel jacket under a copper outer layer. Now, knowing how the Austrians build and maintain their weapons (Glocks, STG58, etc.) do you really think they are going to get cheap on the ammo and shoot something damaging down the bore? DavidDetroit is correct. I have seen recovered slugs from the Port. and the engaged rifling does not extend into the steel. But of course you need to do what you think is best. FWIW- I have shot quite a bit of Port. with NO problems.

It is military ammo, not match ammo.  That said, the quality is very good in my opinion.  Out of my bolt gun, it will shoot sub MOA (26" barrel Rem. 700).

Good stuff for 15cents/shot.

I have no doubt that your AR10 will work just fine with it.  Since it is cheap, you can go out and enjoy your rifle rather than running $1/shot target ammo down the tube and never get to go out and practice.

Now then, do I need an AR10 or a Serbu .50?  Tough call and my wife thinks I have too many guns now!

Serbu .50, is a big bad boy. AR10 a little sweeter and gentler on the shoulder and the pocketbook when *feeding*. Good luck with your decision.

Not to be a douche, but what is .308 NATO? I know of 7.62 NATO and .308 but not .308 NATO.

IMHO, I think he is referring to a quoting of the SPORTSMANSGUIDE.com and BTW, I may not know enough to actually comment on this but,
'This will heat up your barrel... NATO .308 Ammo' & 'PORTUGUESE NATO .308 AMMO' ...
