I'm not a reloader, but I've heard other guys talk about getting some "dirty loads" (obviously, not good).

What does this mean?

I was under the impression "Dirty Load" just meant that the particular load burns dirty and leaves a lot of coke behind in the action/barrel. That's what it means to me unless the meaning is more deep.

For instance, Win 231 burns much dirtier in my 1911 than VV N320.

Using powders that are too slow for the cartridge.

Such as H-380 loaded in a .223 with a 55 grain bullet will leave alot of residue in barrel and action.
