Those names refer to the chamber, not the ammo.
A NATO spec chamber will shoot 5.56 AND .223, while a .223 chamber will often have problems with 5.56. Therefore, the .223 Wylde chamber was designed with specs smack dab in the middle. Tighter chamber than NATO for better accuracy, looser than a .223 for better reliability with all types of ammo. |

The Bill Wylde reamer was desiged for Service Rifle competition.
The body dimensions on a Wylde chamber are NATO spec. The differences are in the throat. The 5.56 NATO has a .227" free-bore. The Wylde reamer is .003" smaller at .224" diameter free-bore. Also, the length of the free-bore section is reduced from NATO specs. In a Wylde chamber, an 80 grain Sierra MK will touch the lands with a cartridge overall length of 2.465" versus 2.550" for a Colt 5.56 NATO chamber. |

I am looking at a Rock River Arms and they have the two chambers listed, can be purchased with either. Since I am purchasing this rifle for range plinking, and would like to use ammo readily available from the internet, which chamber should I buy and still have flexability? Thanks, 77Bronc |

Go with the Wylde. 5.56 reliability with enhanced accuracy.

Get a chrome lined M16 spec chamber. Commonly and incorrectly called a 5.56mm NATO chamber.
The M16 and M249 both fire 5.56mm NATO ammo and have different chambers. -- Chuck |

What do you want him to elaborate on? The fact that both the M249 and the M16 are 5.56mm 1:7 NATO yet have different chamber specs or The M16 Spec chamber is the correct terminology? or The Reasons to get a Proper Chrome M16 Chamber? |

I was curious about the M-16 spec terminology. I have never heard of an M-16 chambering reamer before. I'm wondering if the 5.56 NATO reamers that are available from JGS, Clymer, etc. are the same as what is used on the M-16, or if they are different. What does the NATO designation on an M-16 barrel mean? NATO chamber?....or that it is not the typical NATO chamber specs but is designed for that ammo anyway.
On the difference between the M-16 and the M249 I'm assuming the 249's chamber is larger in the body area to insure reliability . Similar to the difference between M-14 and an M-60 chambers. I know that LC brass fired from an M-60 is a bear to resize compared to brass fired from an M-14. Thanks. |

Since there are other 5.56mm NATO weapon systems out there that do not use the M16 spec chamber.
SA-80, AR-70/90, H&K33/41, G36 etc. As far as I know no real NATO barrel will say that. All the Colt, FNMI, and Diemaco bbls I have seen say C/FNMI/D MP 1:7 |

As far as I have ever seen no Colt M16 barrel has very said 5.56mm NATO on it, the FNMI or Diemaco do not either. Bushmaster 1:9 bbls do say that (even though they are not used by the Army) |

That's weird. I have an AR15 that I built up from one of the M-16 kits sold by Tapco awhile back that has [b]C MP 5.56 NATO 1/7[/b] on the barrel.
I'm assuming it has the original barrel on it but maybe not? Chuck's statement about 5.56 NATO being incorrect terminology for an M-16 barrel made me curious because I have a "supposed" M-16 barrel with NATO stamped on it by Colt. I also have a pre-ban AR15 H-BAR barrel that has the same markings on it but with "HBAR" added at the end. |
