The best is definitely Hirt, but the price reflects that.
An excellent alternative is Port. |

I like the South African in .308 in my M1A. But I have heard others say they prefer Port in FAL's for some reason or other. Probably the adjustable gas system.

This question can't be answered with the way you posted it. "Best" ammo is completely subjective. My FAL will shoot very reliably and accurately with Portuguese FNM and crappy with the Hirtenburg. But the German will shoot 1.5" groups in my friend's FAL and the Port. only 3". There is really no correct answer here except to those who can say if a certain ammo is dangerous or heavily corroded. Every rifle has it's own characteristics and the thing to do is to buy a little of each and sample it in your rifle. BTW, I'm looking for more German, where have you seen any for sale?

You don't say what type of firearm you will be using so I'll say that if you have a chrome lined barrel it should all be a good deal for general plinking and blasting. However if you plan to shoot any of this from a CM or SS barrel use a magnet to test the jacket material and stay away from the bi-metal stuff. Hirtenberger,Portugese and Argentina make both copper jacket and bi-metal so take your magnet with you to gun shows.

What is the issue with SS barrel and the bi-metal ammo? The bi metal has a copper wash on it… right???

The copper wash keeps the bullet from rusting before use; however, the harder jacket material under the wash "drags" much more on the rifling than gilding metal.

The headstamp is 80-MDRP and 7.62x51. Bought it in a 50 Cal can from some big dealer, can't remember, but they claimed it had match grade bullets (don't they all?). The thing is, it shoots better than anything out of this one FAL and the brass is boxer primed. |

I think Dragunov is talking about DAG, it fragments like the 55 grn 5.56. Anyway all I ever buy is Izzy and S.A. in 7.62 NATO.

I find Hertenberger ammo in general (and their 7.62mm NATO specifically) to be mediocre ammo. I'd not walk across the street to buy it unless there was some drastic price reason.
Note that I consider ammunition to be a [i]one time use[/i] item and I leave the cases where they fall on most ranges. The ranges I use have folks who clean them for the surplus brass vs. picking them up and putting them the trash, as is proper etiquette on most ranges. Ammo I've fired recently with good results, defined as my ability to hit 9"x9" steel plates from the standing position at 120 meters includes some Chilean surplus we paid less than 10 cents a shot for -- delivered. This ammo chronographed to M80 Ball spec with a SD of 15fps, very very nice. SA R1M1 had a SD of 18fps, Radway Green was about 28fps. Anything under 1% of muzzle velocity is good ammo. Try several "brands" in your rifle. My 7.62mm rifles are all M14-chamber spec and can digest literally any 7.62mm I've tried. If you have something fussy like an AR10 you may need to pinpoint specific ammo. -- Chuck |
