what happens when you set off unchambered or incorrectly fired brass?

for examble, if you loaded .40SW into .45ACP, or 9mm into .40SW and fired it, what would happen to the brass?

what if you clamped it in some vicegrips or something and set it off manually (hammer and nail to primer)?

assuming you clamped the round, would the bullet go flying in a general direction, or shoot of randomly?

i'm asking because a friend and i had an argument about this, but neither of us have ever tried it (nor plan to), but we're still curious. i think the pressure would destroy the brass and be a decent hazard, he thinks it would remain in tact and be fairly safe.

so would the brass deform, fragment, crack, or survive? anybody have pictures?

In my experience...

When a round goes off without a chamber/barrel, the brass turns into shrapnel, and the bullet barely goes anywhere.  It's usually found fairly close by.

Firing in the wrong chamber can have several outcomes.  You could have a nasty kB!  Or you could get brass that auto-resizes itself to fit the larger chamber.  I have seen both.
