Does the mag block determine which upper I can use?

So if I put a SoCom block in, I would have to get an oly upper, and if I use a Hahn or Hytech I can use a Colt or Rock River?

Or am I totally off base?

IIRC a SOCOM Block is for sten mags and an Oly Upper, You've got that right.

If you want to go Colt/RRA then you have several options:

ASA Block
Rock River Block

or the one that I just bought

VM Hy Tech.

The advantage is that you don't have to modify your Uzi mags with this block. And from what I've seen so far this block (3rd Gen?) has alot of the bugs worked out. Space in the back for a a ribbed mag. Raised release button. . .
