I'm thinking about getting a dedicated .22 upper and was wondering:

1.  does anyone currently sell (I know a couple companies I'd seen advertising a few years back have folded) dedicated .22 uppers in a postban M44 config and

2. does anyone sell .22 mags that look like (or fit into) standard AR mags?  

I really want the finished rifle to look as much like a mil-spec M4 as possible.

CMMG Inc. has postban .22lr uppers for the AR. I believe it uses DPMS mags, but don't quote me on that.

I know some folks like Kurt at Kurts Kustom Firearms have chopped orlite or thermolds and inserted .22lr mags into them- not sure what .22lr type mags they were, though. Maybe someone can shed some light as to if this would work with DPMS mags...

If they fit, might be able to get some crappy USA mags and have them chopped and fitted around the .22lr mags.  Probably the only good use for USA mags I have thought of [;)]

DPMS offers an m4 config in a dedicated 22lr upper and in complete rifle form i have the heavy barrel model from dpms but changed it to the m4 the mags are the same as the old colt conversions

I just bought a complete DPMS M4-style (post-ban) rifle in .22LR. It was the first and the only one I've ever seen, so I jumped on it right away. I've seen quite a few M4-style uppers for sale, however. It's a lot of fun to shoot (I just wish they had 30rds. magazines available), and has a great trigger (much better than my Bushmaster). Besides, it's amazing how many heads it turned at the range when I took it out for the first time. [:)]

Just bought the DPMS upper from Midway for $359 last month. Came with 2 mags, fits perfect on my Bushmaster lower. Shoots great, a great plinker.

[url=http://www.kuehlprecisionfirearms.com/KPF%20.22%20upper%20M-4.htm]Kuehl Precision[/url] and [url=http://www.kurtskustomfirearms.citymax.com/catalog/item/29585/1131.htm]Kurt's Kustom[/url] both make M4 style uppers that use the Ciener kits for the bolt.  30-round mags are available (but really expensive).  Kurt will weld steel aftermarket mag bodies onto the Ciener mags if you want.  (20-round body on a 10-round Ciener, 30-round body on a 30-round Ciener.)  Somebody here has posted pics of some with Termold bodies, but I don't know who did the work.

One of the conversion kits, I think the Army M261 kit, used 10-round mag inserts that fit into a USGI magazine.  [url=http://www.compasslake.com/22uppers.htm]Compass Lake[/url] and [url=http://www.accuracyspeaks.com/22lrar15.htm]Accuracy Speaks[/url] make uppers that use the M261 kit, but they don't make M4 style uppers (just DCM practice uppers).

You can modify the Ciener mag to fit in an Orlite mag.  Here's what I did: I Cut the Orlite feed lips off matching the same angle of the Ciener mag. You need to "sandwich" the Ceiner mag body between layers of cardboard. The layers of cardboard must be cut to make a TIGHT fit inside the Orlite mag body. You can use a couple strips of duc tape to keep the cardboard aligned as you insert everything into the Orlite mag. I like using cardboard as it will not trap moisture against the Ciener mag. This works extremely well with 30 round Ciener mags. The 10 round mags don't fit nearly as tight, but it does work. I didn't mind cutting these Orlite mags as they were only $2.50 a piece from Knob Creek, April 2002.

To take it one step further, I wanted to see if I liked the idea of attaching two mags together. I had some para-cord and decided to try it. It works extremely well. I didn't do this for rapid mag changes. I did this for convenience when I carry them. I have a piece of wood between the mags. I then wrapped the wood with a piece of non skid shelf liner (from Lowes). The paracord makes it tight and there is no movement. It's not permanent and only takes about a minute to unwrap.

Years ago I did the same sort of thing using cheap 40 rounder steel mags and the 30 round 22lr mags.Though I simply JB welded the two together. They are still working after 15+ years.

I'd avoid the DPMS and CZ models. No hi-cap mags.

Yes, the Ciener 30-rounders are high-$$$ for NOW, but that will change in nine months. [:)]

I have an A2 Fulton M4 upper and it shoots like a dream. I'm collecting parts now to build an A4 upper with a Fulton bull barrel.

I did the USA mag treatment on four 10-round mags and I have three 30-rounders to do next.
