While shooting my Oly 45ACP upper I noticed smoke coming out from around the free float tube.
When I took the upper off I noticed that the gas tube hole is unplugged. Is this normal or is it supposed to be plugged?

The upper on my 9mm upper is unplugged. I think they use standard 5.56 uppers, and modify them for the ejector "spring". I compared a 5.56 upper with my 9mm, and they look identical. Except for the pin which holds the ejector in.

That is correct. leaving the gas tube hole unplugged is perfectly OK.
