Press with my thumb. Only time I pull the CH is for rapid fire in a CMP match or with a .22 conversion.

Assuming the bolt is back and you're swapping out a mag, bolt catch. If it's your first magazine and the bolt is forward, charging handle. No matter how hard you hit the release its not going to move the bolt back to get a round in the camber.

obviously for the first time - only way is ch when bolt is back - thumb to ping pong EDIT: There is only one way to charge your ar15 and that is by the CH. Releasing the bolt is another question. |

Thumb the release paddle.
I tried a BAD lever on my training / HD rifle, but had more issues with it than instances where it seemed to help. More practice likely would have helped, but I think my hand size and ingrained muscle memory made me bump it too often when it wasn't time. It's now on my plinker rifle with the scope. |

But I pretty much never pull it back and charge the rifle with it. If one of my guns is going on a range trip, the action is always open during transport. So the charging handle is pulled back and the bolt is locked to the rear at home. When I get to the range the mag goes into an open bolt and the paddle is pressed to release the bolt. During storage, I typically leave the action open so air can circulate through the barrel, so even if it's a quick grab at home, the action is already open and the charging handle isn't touched. |

I think the Slapper/smackers are really just channeling their inner envy for the coolest bolt release in firearms which is the HK-Slap for the MP5. Stop slapping your AR's and get yourself one of the GSG or HK 22lr MP5 clone so you can so a proper bolt release slap

I'm a bad ass range shooter, I lock my bolt to the rear with the charging handle and shoot the rest of the day by just releasing the bolt on the next mag.
I don't generally charge the rifle with the CH, only use it to lock the bolt back. After that, it's ping pong paddle time. Old drill instructor taught me the basics at Fort Lenard wood, been doing it the old Army way ever since. I have a BMC Mod4 handle on my rifle and could slam it around without fear of a failure. |
