Hello all,

Over the last several years I've looked for simple solutions for my day and night vision mission needs that no one seemed to make.  The first item was a simple picatinny tripod rail attachment I was making to mount surveillance gear for several years.  This turned out to be a great success.  The second item was a fixed beam IR Illuminator that was appropriately named "Da Torch" right here on the ARFCOM.  The follow on, Da Variable Beam Torch has been a huge success story with hundreds of units being sold in its first month of release!  It's gone on to be my best seller so far in accessory gear.

The next critical mission item I’ve been prototyping over the last 2 years is a stand alone high quality simple scope ring with a small rail affixed to the top of the ring.

A bit of history on the SARS on how they came about.
In 1994, I had an incident where I was at 10x on the back of a house. A not so good guy popped up sorta speak at close range and it was a very disturbing situation with NO time to get on target.  This is when I decided to get some sort of BUID on my scope. I virtually hand made my first unit out of a MKIV ring and welded a small weaver rail to it. I used a Optima 2000 back then which was really the only mini red dot sight game in town at that time. This is how I got the idea for the SAR and made numerous units to my local LE agencies. I am sure at the Shot Show one manufacturer has already decided to copy my free-floating design since I went public with the SAR early last year. Funny business this is.

There are other products out there that now do this, but these designs either fix the rail as a primary and stationary scope cap ring or were a very low quality ring/rail systems.  In most cases, manufactures located this rail cap directly on top of their ring causing tall scope turret obstruction, which limits the scope one might want to use and also making elevation and windage adjustments to the dot optic were extremely difficult while mounted on the weapon. Some makers offset a permanent scope cap rail to the right or left (too far), which requires too much head movement to view an optical dot during critical times.  Most of these rail caps also required you to purchase the manufactures scope ring in order for the other rail top cap to fit and/or a specific dot brand due to their base.

With that in mind, I embarked on this project with these requirements.

1. Ability to mount the entire ring and rail anywhere on the scope tube  (mostly full size scopes).
2. Ability to mount the ring and rail at any angle I needed.
3. The scope ring rail also had to be short enough not to impede with the scope adjustments itself, but at that same time give me enough rail versatility to mount a host of small dot sights and IR illuminator devices for numerous mission call outs especially for bolt guns where no rail space exists on most platforms.
4. Lightweight, machined aluminum, hard anodized and able to withstand harsh recoil of firearms and ones bank account!

SAR1 = 1.1oz
SAR2 = 1.3oz
SAR3 = 1.0oz
SAR4 = 1.1oz
The Doctor Optic on its own with its weaver mount comes in at 2.1oz

Well I am very happy to announce after 2 years of prototyping we came up with a design and found a manufacturing company to produce the SAR1, SAR2, and SAR3's.  The SAR 1 is a 1” ring design, the SAR 3 is a 30mm design and the SAR4 is a 34mm design.   The SAR 2 is not actually a scope ring, but a 5mm-11mm dovetail to picatinny rail attachment that eases the pain for you rimfire dovetail folks that have a need for a rail attachment. I've struggled with some awesome 22 rimfires and shotguns out there only to find out a picatinny type rail for my scopes and dot sights were virtually impossible to find for these dovetail receiver systems.

Price for the SAR 1, 2 and 3's are at   $79.00ea plus S/H.  
Price for the SAR4's are at $89.00ea plus S/H

Aimpoints amazing Micro T1 along for the ride on a SAR






Notice the very low profile I held when one peaks through the Luepy's turrets!  There is very miminal head movement when transitioning from the main optic to the dot. This was an important design aspect of the SAR.






The SAR3 and pound for pound (really ounce for ounce) the best MRD to date is Aimpoints Micro T1.







Here is the SAR2 5-11mm dovetail to picatinny rail attachment. You'll need a pair of these for normal dual ringed telescopic scope sytems.

Duffy, worked with different rail slots during prototyping, here is a pic of the final designed dovetail rail showing the mil-spec slots for critical scope mounting retainability.


Edited to add: You beat me to it Duffy.... For red dot sites that do not have a recoil lug, I wanted the best versatility in a top rail.

Agreed Duffy, that is why the dovetail system we did for mounting optical scopes of course has a full fledged mil-spec slot.  This SAR1 and SAR3 rails will primarily be used for a host of red dot optics out there.  I've tested the Doc Ops, JP's and FP's along with the older O2000 and they all work great on the SAR1 or SAR3's.  For IR lasers illuminators (small adjustable beam proto units I am now working with) I also needed the best versatiity for limited space, escpecially for bolt guns.

Especially for this bolt gunner when the real estate are like gold, you can simply add your mount and hook up a IR laser for long range shooting.  This way you don;t have to invest in an over weight rail system like the M24A2. at 59.99 each, the price is not bad at all...especially for my SPR with a Lupy MR/T......:)

I have been toying with the idea of mounting a IR laser on my favorite hunting rig. I mounted the SAR foward of my turrents at  12o'clock.Once everthing was nice and tight I added my Universal Laser. (A mini laser aimer with red & IR beams)The Universal Laser and SAR1 looked like they where made for each other. I also mounted a Doctor optic mini red dot on the SAR, and tried different locations. (A great set up for those who don't have any NVDs, or want to have CQB options) I didn't get enough time to go out and hunt with it, as I spotted some DAMN water buffalo in pasture next to one of our wheat fields.I spent the next several hours trying to push them out, but they had their minds set on staying.Maybe next weekend I wll go on a water buffalo hunt with the 240 and SAR1.
