I had a few minutes, so I lined up some AR15s (numerically by model number) for a picture...
- prototype - early 01 - late 01 - 02 - 03 - 04 - 05 - 06 - 07 - 08 - 09 (XM177E1) - 29 (XM177E2) I'll try to get another picture of the "all others" category (M16K, 621, Delta HBAR, M231 stuff like that), before long. You are truly an artist, JT, and it's really impressive to see so many of these all together. Sure gives an idea of what you've been up to these past few years!
I'm curious how you store these "at home." If you don't mind the question, do you keep the collection on display somehow? Seems it would be a shame to hide a family like that! Noticed, though, that your "early 601" needs a Type A stock...and then, you've got the early and late 601s, but no XM16E1 to go with the A1? I guess the build list just never ends!

OlGunner, to answer your question... unfortunately, my collection isn't displayed. Everything is in a triple-alarmed and double-locked vault area that not many get to access. Really, 99 out of 100 people that come here wouldn't know or care about all the different AR15 models, anyway. John Thomas |

John Thomas Right those are Type B's, which are essentially the same profile as the Type C Stock but made of Bakelite and not Fiberglass. Probably tough to tell the difference in a picture but The B/C Stock's Profile differs at the bend at the bottom and they are much skinnier at the buffertube entrance. Easy to Spot when they are laid out in front of you, then they make a late style Type C and that just throws a monkey wrench into the whole machine.

I've viewed god photos of rifles in the 200 range, and don't believe they were swivel, either. FWIW, I've never personally seen the rotating variant. |

To clarify...You were correct. The "first 100" Model 01s (which had Type A stocks) had unpainted brown furniture. After that, all stocks were painted green or black. All Type B's came from the factory painted. John's "early 601" has a stripped Type B stock to simulate the very early brown furniture, but as he said, to be 'correct," it should be a Type A. He could have used the Type A that he now has on his "battle worn 601" and simply stripped it the rest of the way, but that would have left him short a battle-worn Type A! (One just never has enough early furniture on hand!) I think that Type B caught some of our attention simply because it is a compromise on that particular build, and compromise is something very rare in a John Thomas build! |
