Thank you! I made it myself with notebook paper and my kershaw. I'm not totally satisfied, but it will work for now.....

If I have the option, I always try to buy stocks with rack numbers over ones not marked for my builds. Boywonder can testify to this fact

Both of mine were standard dachshunds, 30 lbs +. One got up to 38 lbs, not really fat either.
Anyway, I like the rack number tribute, that's what I originally came here to say. The old school pics of those guys with the cigarettes hanging and that attitude. Don't get much better.
I had to quit, and don't regret it a bit though. |

I've still got my dad's old USMC stencils in the garage. I'll have to pull them out and see what they can do for a rack number on my old SP1.
For those who are familiar with the rack numbers, how would they have done a rack number on a CAR-15 or an XM-177? |

While there's probably a regulation stating how they're supposed to be applied, in practice I think anything goes. Not specific to XMs, but I've seen dog tags stamped with numbers and then fastened to sling swivels or lanyard rings on pistols, and also some Dymo labels glued on to stocks. I also found some Colt N1 stocks at a gun show which had rack numbers written with paint markers. |

Some stocks I've seen had large numbers. I have some that the rack numbers were hand painted on. I've also seen a few with Dymo labels so I bought an old Dymo label maker from ebay to play with.

Stocks with rack numbers are similar to police surplus handguns with the department number stamped on them. I have several. My favorite is my 3.5" Austin PD marked S&W Model 27.
I also have a Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department model S&W model 15. 
It is just cool to have firearms that exhibit some history. |

When I was made my unit armorer, we just used paint markers. Granted we were just marking the stocks on our M4s. We still had about a cage (10-20 rifles) of M16A2s that we hadn't turned over yet to proper authority and just got used when needed on rare occasions. Or got taken out of the rack when a disgruntled 19K being made to be armorer instead of playing on his MGS needed to have his spirits uplifted. They also had the old school stencil markings on them
