I never did one of those, but I built a frankencarbine with a type "D" stock several years ago when I was still a retro hacker, and really liked the handling.

The one in the middle I call my 651M, M for middy. I really like the way it feels, it is one of my favorite rifles to shoot.

The middy definitely looks more balanced, but either way, the fixed stock carbine is pretty much my favorite as far as handling goes. Why the 651/652's had flat slip rings when the XM177 pioneered the delta rings, we'll likely never know, but I'm building a C7 upper 16" carbine in ban state configuration and consider the lack of a collapsible stock no great loss. I really like the way these things handle. Did I say that already?
FWIW, the heavier buffer helps the reliability of the carbine as well. They used them quite a bit on XM177E1's in VN and I suspect that this is the reason. |

Carbines w/ fixed stocks & rifles w/ collapsible stocks just look like freak mutants to me. I can't even stand the sight of them, nor rifles w/ 30rd mags & carbines w/ 20rd mags. They just don't seem right. But hey, to each his own. Glad you guys like 'em. |

Best thing about the AR is that you can swap the uppers and lowers to either configuration without much hassle.
Works around here since my wife is a lot shorter than I am and the rifle stock is too long for her. YMMV, but watch out if your wife wants you to build her a separate upper, she's got something planned....
