Just wanted to share some more pictures with you guys, these are from early 2008 in Afghanistan.  This weapon "belonged" to an Air Force Second Lieutenant who was coming on one of my convoys, he simply referred to it as an M4.  We know better, though.

I'm referring to it as a GUU-5P, because I suspect that's probably how it's classified, but I haven't got any real way to confirm that.

Unfortunately, it doesn't show in this photograph, but the barrel was in fact 1/7, making a 723 barrel.

What's interesting is that the lower is obviously not a rebuilt 604 or any other military model.  It's a commercial M16A1 lower.  If I had to put money on it, it looks like a re-barreled R653 purchased COTS.  The upper has the "C H" forge mark, common on 653s, and the Air Force is known to have some 653s in the inventory.

e stock was the vinyl acetate coated two position stock, which would be correct for the 653. By every indication, it looks almost stock 653 except for the 1/7 barrel.  Either way these AF carbines are great little lightweight rifles!

And just for the fun of it!

Nice, yeah I agree it is probably a re-barreled 653.

I like the last pic too.

A thing of beauty. Thanks for the photos!

I hope you took lots of notes and pictures.
In 30 years people will be building retro Afghan M4 rifles and you'll have people asking you lots of questions.
I just hope they're building real rifles, not airsoft...oops, almost ended up stepping on my soapbox.

Looks more like the weapons we took to referring to as GAU-5/Ps, the first run of rebarreled 653 types, rather than the more serious upgrades with M4 barrels or complete M4 uppers.  It is interesting that for what little else was done, someone swapped out the A1 grip for an A2.

The grip may have been damaged or worn.

It makes you wonder what kind of shape a pistol grip would have to be in to make it  non-serviceable?

It's good to see a great looking old warhorse still in service.

I would replace a slightly chipped or cracked one.
I don't want it failing when I NEED it.
Or one that is slick.
I want a good grip on my rifle...even when it's raining.

I've seen a fair number of 733s floating around in Afghanistan, as well as whatever you call slab side and partial fence lowers with M4 flat top uppers .

The latter represent what has generally been referred to as the late GUU-5/P configuration.  Having actually talked to the shop at Lackland AFB about this, there is little to no uniform requirements.  Weapons are built from what is available to the quasi-M4A1 configuration.  These will, it is planned, be eventually replaced with actual M4A1 types.

GUU-5P blasphamous abortions...

Another set of nice photos Augee.  I like the sling set up.  It looks similar in function to an HK/MP-5 set up (without the clip next to the magwell, of course).  At first I assumed the issued owner was a lefty, but it looks completely ambidextrous.

Do you know anything about it, make, etc?

Thanks for the great post - I'm living vicariously through you!

We are having such a hard time getting M4's that we can get GAU and GUU's in the meantime.

These were used by U.S. Gov't civilians, not USAF, so they'll probably be around for a long time to come.

On a related note, does anyone know when photobucket "gives" me more bandwidth?  Or am I screwed until I start paying them?

Not that it's a big deal for $3 a month, but it is a pain.
