Was the casting flash on the inside of the carry handle non existant on the 601 or was it removed by filing.
I picked up a 601 upper some time ago, and the area inside the carry handle looks a lot like the 604 I modified to 601 some time ago.
For some reason I thought they were cast without the flashing, but now that I think of it ...that dont make sense.

They are not cast, but forged. Every 601 receiver I've seen has been smooth. Are you sure it is a 601?

I guess I'm not sure, I purchased it as a 601. It has all the features of a 601 'cept the flashing inside the carry handle looks 'removed'.
The pivot hole is rebated.
There are no rear sight marking on the right rear of the carry handle.
The rear sight is a 601, not a repro.
There are no forging marks in the recess under the rear sight.
'C' in a square over a triangle up front.
Ejection port door is correct.
The hole for the ejection port door spring is correct.
The off set profile under the ejection port is correct.
It appears slightly pitted and refinish in what I'll call the matte black, dont appear to be recent.
It was the inside the handle that got me thinking........

Unless you got it pretty recently(last couple of years) I really doubt it is a modified 604.
If it was modified then someone went to a lot of trouble.

My original 601 upper looks pretty smooth.  The ones I converted from early 604 uppers look pretty smooth too.

Sounds right. The only reason I asked was the comment of it being cast.

I got some pictures up if anyone cares to look.
I have this upper, and the 604 upper I modified a couple of years ago.
If this one is a fake I'd just as soon use the one I did, I'm close to gathering all the parts for my Retro 601, and would like
this upper to be the genuine, but..............
I just remembered..................I dont know how to make the link hot, whats the secret???

That looks normal. The way it sounded to me, you were saying there was a lot of forging flash there, like a 604.

ETA pictures of mine.

Look for the hole in the receiver where the end of the Eject port cover spring goes. It is almost inpossible to drill that to match the orginal hole.
