I was wandering around Sam's Club the other day, and I came across this DVD set:

VIETNAM  America's Conflict

Over 23 hours of documentary footage from the Vietnam War.


 



It's absolutely worth the $5 price tag.


Just a friendly heads-up.

I picked up my copy from  the $5 bin at Wally World.

Only watched the first disc so far.

Very cool find! It looks like a compilation of government-produced films from the 1960s. How's the picture & sound quality? (I buy a lot of these discount documentaries on DVD; some are great shape, others look like the film was run through a cheese grater, copied to VHS, and then "bumped" to DVD.



)

Whats up with the A2 HGs on that rifle?

Probably some post-war photo of a training exercise, picked out by someone who didn't know any better. When I saw that photo, I thought to myself, "The National Archives must have millions of Vietnam War photos to choose from, and this is the one they pick to put on the box?"




That being said, it is a terrific collection of films produced by the Dept of Defense during the war.
 

I searched for the "10,000 Day War" DVD set a while back..... Crazy mad price...like over $200 bones!
Any ideas where to find this collection reasonable in price?

I tried my local library...They didn't have it, but another library in the area did...but they wouldn't allow it to be transferred to my library...and my library card isn't good at the other county's library...  

...Otherwise I'd copy it and happily burn in copyright hell...  

I remember watching this in the 80's (I think)...it was really spooky; I was making dinner one night and I heard Basehart saying..."The Marines return to Viet Nam"...(It was the embassy evac episode)...I had the shakes...I was sure someone was going to knock on my door and drag me back in...  

I just checked my local library and they have 10,000 Day War on video tape.
Sure wish it were DVD.

There's free programs to convert it to DVD format if your PC can connect to your VCR (I use VistualDub Sync to capture, and TMPGEncoder to convert). I've converted a lot of old movies to DVD. But how many cassettes is it on??? That was a long documentary...IIRC, Amazon says 600 minutes for the DVD set...that's only 10 hours...Seems like the series was longer than that...

It said it was 6 video tapes.

I'll look into converting it.

Yep, wife just picked me up the Vietnam DVD set in the $5 bin at Walmart along with Thin Red Line. Not too sure if that was a good movie or not.

Wow. Very cool.

When I do a 2 hr VHS movie, the longest part is converting a 2 hr uncompressed AVI capture down from 20GB to 4.37GB (or whatever a DVD+R is) VOBs...It takes ~7 hrs on my PC...I let it run overnight...and I boost the audio with Cool Edit 2000...

There's commercial progs that do it all easier but they cost $$$...

I'll have to see if I can find the VHS version...

I checked Wally World, but nada. No Sam's club in my (red) neck of the woods either. Bummer - I really wanted a copy.

I'll check my Wal-Marts in my area and get an extra for you if I find them.
I'm going to go check one of the now.

...just FYI, that collection is more than $5.
And I don't think Wal-Mart carries it (but Barnes & Noble or Borders might).





 

Well the Wal-Mart close to work didn't have it.
But I picked up the Thin Red Line for $5.
Some guy was walking by and gave me his opinion of the movie.
He said he was in Vietnam.
Then he started talking about what it was like there and which Vietnam movies were most "like being there." (Platoon and Full Metal Jacket)
Luckily I've learned enough to just shut up and listen.(I was just 8 years old when Vietname ended)
He did most of the talking and I learned some interesting stuff.

I also got a 4 DVD set of 20 old WWII movies.
Looks like Daddy is going to get to watch his movies the next few evenings.
Payback for all the Pokemon and Princess movies I've endured lately.

Not a bad way to spend $10.  
But now I have to re-save that $10 for my next NoDak NDS-16A1.
Hope they don't release them too soon.

I'll also check Half Priced Books.
They have used movies too.

It's an amazing movie, but don't expect it to be a Pacific Theater version of "Saving Private Ryan." The story & characters are much more fluid; kind of hard to follow at times. But it has awesome cinematography and a powerful score by Hans Zimmer. The attack on the Japanese bunker (where my avatar comes from) is absolutely fantastic.



After I saw that movie, I absolutely had to have an M1 Garand.
Tons of M1 Garand pr0n throughout.





 

"Night of the Dragon" on disc 1 is narrated by Charlton Heston and it alone is worth the $5.

The quality of the episodes greatly depends on the quality of the documentary itself.
Some are fantastic, others average.

But overall there's a ton of retro goodness in these documentaries.

So I found the giant $5 DVD bin at my local Wal-Mart. Started rummaging around trying to find this set of DVDs, and just when I was about to give up, bing! There it was.

I hear you.  The same thing just happened to me.  Damn that's a big bin full of DVD's!!!!
