I am trying to make my decision.
I want one "retro" AR15.
Should I build a period correct rifle or should I buy an SP1?
Part of me says to build to save some money, but another part of me says get the rifle with the pony on the side.

Personally, I'm glad I built mine; it was a good learning experience and I got exactly what I wanted.

Build.  SP1s are neat, but overrated IMO.

If you buy the SP1 you may be able to stop at just the one. If you build period correct, you won't stop at just the one. Piecing together is an addiction, plain and simple. The SP1 does have the look, but searching for the parts is part of the fun. If you can hold out for NoDak and their period correct lower, I would definitely build. Keep your eyes open and you can easily build period correct for $500-650.

I think I probably will build, especialy because I want to build a Colt 601.
That green furniture is sexy!

Nothing wrong with black either. Complete upper and stock set is all surplus Colt M16/A1 parts. Current production lower/lpk. I have between $575-600 in it.

I like push pins and mag fences.
Colt never built an A1 semi so I had to build one.

My XM177E2 clone is my absolute
favorite gun of all I own. The feel,
function, and it has cosmetics that
steal the show.

Go retro, you wont regret it.

That rifle makes me hard. I own a bastardized 601 copy that is a dedicated home for a M261 kit. Handles like a dream. Light, light, light. Super slick with the plain upper.

I built a 601 clone on an SP1 upper and lower that I bought stripped. I already had many of the parts laying around so it wasn’t much of a challenge to get it all together. Still, there are a few small parts that I need to get it all just right. If you did buy an SP1 you could “tune” it to your liking.

My next 601 project, another SP1, will be sporting this furniture.

As previously stated, once you start building, it's hard to stop.
