i'm getting my 1st ar pistol but i can't decide on the length? 7.5", 10.3", 11.5"....???

If we're talking barrels I vote 7.5" anything else I vote 13" but that's only in the morning

A pistol should be pistol-length/ 7.5". If you want a substitute for an SBR, then 10.5+.

It was a hard decision for me between 7.5" or 10.5". I ended up ordering a 9.5" from Blackhole Weaponry instead. I'm still waiting on it, but if it doesn't work out I might go with a Daniel Defense 10.3".

9.5" is an interesting choice. Is it carbine or pistol length gas system? I thought 10.3" was the shortest you could go with carbine gas. FWIW, I'm going 7.5". A pistol should be a pistol was my reasoning. Now if was for a SBR lower, I would probably lean pretty hard toward a 10.5", but no SBR for me

Never a single FTF or any other problem from my 7.5". Most of the "problems" you hear about are people using the wrong combination of parts. Wrong buffer (to light) and shorty buffer tubes. I find that there's a lot of people that try to assemble their own gun but have zero experience working on anything. Do the research on what works and what doesn't (the whole combination) then pick what you want. I can tell you, my combo runs like a Ferrari and you can find every last detail in the picture thread (think it's on pg32 or 33 now)

I've been at this for a couple weeks now and so I speak from experience when I say the primary purpose for AR pistols is: for "shits and giggles". That being said my short answer to the OP is "as short as feasible." Go crazy.

I went through the same debate and thank God Adams Arms offered the 7" bbl piston upper because it addresses the reliability concerns of a 7" bbl. As for the lost velocity, I'm not going to worry about it too much (round still travels hella fast) and eventually I will load up some Barnes 55gr TSX which will perform well out of a 7" bbl.
I like 7.5" length but a 10.5" for reliability and velocity. Here's what I ended up with.

They use a 3 land polygonal rifling which I think I read somewhere is supposed to help with the velocity issue. 
Now earlier I said I was gonna go with the DD 10.3", but I had an impulse buy today and went to Rainier Arms to pick up a 10.5" White Oaks barrel. The reason being is because I hate waiting....the 9.5" is on order, and I can't wait for a DD 10.3".....I want a barrel TODAY! So the WOA 10.5" will hold me off until I get a chance to try the 9.5". FYI: What's nice about Rainier Arms is since I bought the BCG and barrel from them, they are going to help me headspace my upper to ensure safety...Even though I bought them at different times (albeit all parts are still new and unused). |

Don't know but I think 12" or 12.5" is ideal for an AR rifle.

ATF is stating anything over 26" OAL can run a forward PG and not be considered an AOW. The gun the ATF declared that on a "single shot" pinned mag California model. I don't know about all others.
Otherwise the RRA 10.5 is 26.5 and GTG. Or just add a rifle length buffer tube on most ar pistols but it still needs to say "other" on the 4437. |

Since I knew I'd be going with a SBR later I did a 762x39 10.5" and I'm already jonesin' for a 7.5" which I think may start sometime next month. It will likely be run as a 22 conv upper for a while so my GF can play on it and realize what BRD/ShortBRD is so she can start working on a "cure."
The LWRC 8" PSD in 68 seems like a wonderful setup albeit expensive. If you need compactness and performance a 10.5" x39 will offer that and will likely be very inexpensive when training. Just keep your eyes open for Yugoslavian milsurp M67. I don't regret doing a 10.5" first but be warned––-once you do a 7.5 will follow soon thereafter. Good luck on your build. |

I'll be going with a 7.3" barrel from CMMG myself.
This was the ONLY one I could find that is 1:7 twist rate and chrome lined. Is there a 7.5" that meets those two criteria that I have yet to find? If anyone knows, please tell me. |
