In comparison to like .300win mags, .30/06, .338 lapuas?

Well i am not sure on those rounds you listed but my 7.5" barreled upper is louder than an CIA Cetme 308 with the CIA muzzle brake. Its just damn loud !!!!!!!!!
And you need to wear sunglasses to shoot them also.

I would use protection of course, but is it more like a crack or a boom that you could feel in your chest???

What was that???  Couldn't here ya !!  Been shooting the AR pistol again.  My 7.5" is LOUD (unbearable) but I have shot the 10.5 several time when I got caught with no protection and you can stand it but it's still pretty dang loud.

Louder than a .44 magnum. Its just loud. Words cannot describe it.

Well, I already own a .45-70 revolver, a .30/06 pistol, and a S&W 500 mag (10 in barrel)

How loud is it compared to rifles?

Is it safe to say at close range the bad guy has more to fear from concussion and lighting on fire from muzzle flash  than actually getting shot?

Getting shot with the 6.5 or 7.5 AR could ruin your whole day (especially head wounds--it will still have a serious hydrostatic effect) but yes, lighting the MOFO on fire is a possibility at 3-4 feet.

I consider it my home defense weapon, for up close and personal affairs, complete with 70+ grain bullets that DO fragment, and I am about to buy a pair of electronic ear plugs, so I can hear later in life  if someone comes through my front door.

As stated, it is louder than a .44 mag.

If I was using it for SD, I'd put a Noveske KFH on it.. directs the concusion at what your shooting at.

I'd say it's more of a concussion than a .44 mag AND a Mosin Nagant M44.

It depends on what ammo I'm using. With Federal XM193, it's louder than a .44 Magnum, compared to my .44 Desert Eagle loaded with 180 grain UMC JSP.
It also has more flash with Federal XM193 than my .44 with UMC ammo, but it hardly has any flash and a much softer report with South African surplus. The SA might have flash retardant and/or it's not loaded as hot, so there's not as much powder burning in the air..

I'm using a Model 1 Sales 7.5" upper with a Model 1 Sales buffer with a .45 long slide spring. The pistol is also more reliable with SA than XM193.

More than those two put together?  Is that what you meant by AND?  Shit...

Will my MSA electronic muffs do it or is this one of those things I need plugs and muffs for?

if you REALLY want loud, put a muzzle brake on it.  Flame blowing, horn tooting, but not a bucking bronco.

Flash is not a problem if you use a Phantom.  I said in another thread that my 11.5" barrel gun with an A2 flash hider had MUCH more flash than my 6.5" barreled Phantom equipped shorty.  In fact, it wasn't really flash, it was a few streaks from unburned powder and a DIM glow INSIDE the brake itself.  This was a dusk test, not total darkness so I could be wrong, but other posts were better at addressing flash more scientifically.

The NOISE is painful without muffs, but the BLAST is much more impressive.  It's hard to quantify, but I'd say it's two to three times the pressure wave of the M44.  I'm talking about the 6.5" btw.

For those who want to address energy, use bullets designed for the 22 hornet in the 40-50gr range.  They'll perform better at the lower velocities.

I don't know about the sound, but out of the 7.5" you definatly feel it going off! Seems to shake everything up. Definatly the most impressive concussion I've ever felt. And yeah, I've shot a pair of shorty .44's off and the concusion wasn't even close. The Mosin Nagant M44 is a pretty big concussion, but it still is not close

I've just used the foam plugs.

What 70+ grain rounds are you using that will fragment properly at any range in a 7.5" barrel?  And are you using a 1/7 twist or 1/9 twist barrel?

Very interesting, had wondered about this option myself....

1/9 twist, I use Hornaday TAP and Sierra Match king OTM for business purposes.

Pics of fragmentation on my blog.

At least going into wet phone books, the heavier rounds will fragment.

55 grain XM 193 did not.

I put a Noveski KFH on my 7.5 and it is quieter than my 16" which has nothing on the end.  The Krink is the only way to go.

I would suggest a Noveske KFH or better yet a KX-3 for a short barrel gun. They are definitely worth it.

KX-3 is the way to go. No flash and alot Quieter on a 7.5" barrel.

I'll put it this way...

I take off my flash suppressor and all the girls at the range tend to jump and pee their pants when I fire the first shot...

That is worth the price of admission IMHO.
