Can anyone tell me if an AR15 type pistol has to be under 3 lbs to be clasified as a pistol?

No, the weight restriction (50 ounces) sunset with the rest of the 94 Clinton AWB.  Unless there are state laws you need to be concerned with there is no weight limit on pistols.
