Assembling my first DPMS pattern AR (done a bunch of AR-15's) and the barrel extension will only go in about 1/8-3/16", ARGH!!!!!  Upper is Cross Machine and Tool and the barrel is Faxon 20".
I'm not going to use a hammer, would cooling the barrel and heating the receiver be proper or would I risk cracking a very expensive receiver once it cools?

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, do exactly that. It will not hurt either part and you will have a fantastically fitted set once complete.

Put the upper in the oven at 200 degrees and put the barrel in the freezer, slip fit.  This is a nice looking barrel hope it shoots like it looks.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
