This past weekend I welcomed a 458 socom to the stable. But damn if I can find a single round anywhere. Boy does my timing suck!

I'm seriously considering the purchase of a 243 barrel just to take advantage of available ammo.  The last 50 Beowulf ammo I saw before this craziness started was $3 a round for reloads!

I think I've got a couple of boxes of 300gr Corbon leftover from my .458 days.  I'll message you later.  Might be able to work out a trade or something.

Just this week I bought a .458 SOCOM from a fella here on AR15.com and was fortunate that the deal included dies, 100 loaded rounds and 100 pieces of new Starline Brass so it was an instant set up for me. If you don't handload, I would tend to agree with you that the pickings are slim for ammo. If you don't,  now would be a good time to explore that option. Like Bldsmith said there is a lot of good information over on the 458 SOCOM forum, but it is down at the moment.

I have been handloading for about 40 years now and still thoroughly enjoy the results of rolling my own.  Most people do and the cost savings aren't bad either.  With todays inflated prices and availability, it wouldn't take very long to recover your up front costs for getting set up. You can load single stage to learn and advance to an entry level progressive and then into a more complex machine if you really get into it.  Handloading gives you a lot more options for almost any caliber you choose to load for, too. The costs are also a lot less, but how much you choose to spend on plinking, hunting and accuracy bullets are up to you. Some people like to play with loads, while others like to find a load they like and stick to it forever.  Its easy and fun and can be a habit forming lifelong hobby.

So far, at least in TX, handloading components are readily available and if availability is good where you live,  your new 458 won't sit idle and you will never have to rely on store bought ammo.

I've not had any problems finding Beowulf ammo at normal prices.  Just ordered an additional 320 rounds from AA, hopefully it doesn't take long to get it.

Thanks guys, for the tips on where to find it. I do reload and I have been unable to find componenets either.

Again, thanks for the tips.

Midway has brassHere
and Natchez shootersHere

I like HDY 325gn FTX at natchez Here

Then the 300gn HDY JHPHere
Primers are Magnum Large Pistol, Most use CCI 350 or WLPM, These might be the toughest to get right now.  Powder depends on what you are shooting.  RL7 is a good all around powder that work on both the Carbine a mid length.  LiL Gun, H110 and IMR 4198 are others but may not work well in a mid length set-up.

I also have a Lee 3 die set I would be willing to part with.

Other than that you just need some reloading data and you'll be ready to rock.

As much as I love the concept of the round, it's simply too proprietary for me. If brass was more plentiful and less expensive, I'd be all over it.

I had the same issue with my 50 beowulf a few years back. sad part was I did reload and I couldn't find brass, bullets or cci 350's. I waited close to a year and all I found was the cci 350's (AA couldn't even produce ammo because of the cci 350 shortage) ended up selling the upper. now I have 100 pieces of brass, 1000 primers, a few lbs of lil gun and a box of bullets in case I decide to build another.

I purchased my 458 upper in Nov.  Picked up the lower the next day.  Then ordered 2 box's of JHP's from Wilson Combat.  There was a couple of WTS adds on 458 SOCOM forums were I picked up 600 rounds of bullets, 150 pcs of brass.  The LGS had 350 primers and the powder.  I kept my eyes peeled for other offers and now haveclose to 1500 bullets and another 800 pcs of brass.   Like I mentioned, the primers might be the hardest to find right now.  But I have enough primers now to reload all my brass 4 times .  Oh I picked up a set of HDY dies from Ebay, LFCD from LEE and a chamber gauge from SBR.  Then with one of my bullet buys got a set of Lee Dies with a LFCD and another SBR chamber gauge.   It is not that hard to find the components if you are willing to look for them.  Then there are so many people willing to help out with data and such.

Just found some federal Large Pistol Magnum primers on Midsouth Shooters Supply  Have not use them before but they could be adapted for 458 SOCOM use with careful load ladders.

Also found some CCI 350's on Precision Shooters Supply
