A lot depends on how you are using the weapon. For me a .458 SOCOM would be a bear defense weapon, so I would be looking for simple, fast, close range type optics. For this I like our Mepro M21 reflex sight. It does not require batteries, is built like a tank, has no delicate internal adjustments or electronics, and is always on and always ready. Illumination works in any lighting condition, including total darkness. It is my favorite optic for this purpose. I am not speaking here as the guy from Mako, but as the guy who goes out in the woods with small children and wants something he can trust. When you are standing with a one-year-old in a backpack on your back and a couple young kids at your feet looking at a huge bear track just starting to fill with water, it gives you a whole new perspective on the kind of gear you want to carry.
If you want to use it for hunting, then you may want some magnification. There may be a shotgun or muzzleloader type scope that may have a ballistic reticle that would work for the caliber - I'm not sure, I haven't looked at the ballistics. If you can get your range and holdover correct, you are not limited to only close range shots (Think Adobe Walls).
