My brother and I are looking to build another AR in the 6.8 platform. We are looking to get maybe a Stag Arms upper. But I have a few questions before we decide to purchase it.

1. We live in NY, so our gun laws are pretty stringent. Do any manufacturers offer a magazine that only holds 10 rounds?

2. I noticed in another post that someone mentions SPEC 2 chamber ? or something to that effect, what does that mean and what are differences between that and anything else offered?

3. How easy is it to reload for? I.E. availability of brass and die sets.

Thanks in advance for any help provided

Visit 68Forums for all your 6.8 needs

Both CProducts and PRI offer 10 round magazines (I don't know about Barret, they may).

SPCII or DMR are the current proper chamber specs.  The Stag qualifies.
Do not get a SAAMI chambered rifle/upper/barrel.  A SAAMI chamber can be reamed to SPCII if you happen to have one.

Reloading is key.  There are many options and varieties of bullets for various purposes.
68Forums will tell you everything you need to know

If I were building I would go with the AR15 Performance upper.

Most SPCII & all DMR chambered barrels are 1 in 11 or 1 in 12.  Shy away from 1 in 10 twist, along with SAAMI chambers.

Check with Ben at Bison Armory, I got a 20" SPR upper from him, with BCG and bolt for $612 shipped.  I got a pic in the 6.8 picture thread.  He builds them to YOUR specs, and the prices are reasonable.

If you get the Stag you will probably need to add the M4 feedramps for reliable feeding. They are pretty much mandatory in the 6.8, unlike 5.56.

If you get a ARPerformance/Titan Armory DMR chambered gun, if you reload, make sure you get a small base sizing die...straight from Constructor's post:

"The largest dia. of a 6.8 chamber or brass just above the extraction groove should be .422". Many books will tell you that .004 is needed for reliable operation in a semi-automatic rifle, that means the case should be .418". New SSA brass is .415" which gives plenty of room but when they are reloaded some dies only size the cases to .420 or .421 which is not small enough and may cause issues, that is why we have been telling everyone to use small base dies."

That looks great and you're right Ben will take care of you..I have the same 20" SPR, only difference is I went with a YHM customizeable forearm and a Levang compensator..And those uppers are accurate...

X 2 on Bison Armory.  Ben will work with you to get you exactly what you need.  His service, communication & attitude are great and he has very reasonable prices for the product you get.

The 18" upper he put together for me is now shooting 1/2" groups with SMKs & H322.

I'll agree on the H322, produces most velocity and accuracy I've tried yet, although I keep reading RE10 will do that also..

I'm w/in a 1/4" of my H322 loads when using RE10x.  The H322 just beats it in accuracy by a small bit, but the 10x is a little quicker for me.

I shot mine for groups today.  It sucks, a 10 shot 0.6" group at 50 yards.  5 shot 0.75" group at 100 yards.   My other ARs are hiding in shame.  The only rifle I have now that matches it is my Rem 700  I need to do some more testing, those were the best groups I got with my hand loads.  Wind was up pretty heavy, I could have gotten more subMOA groups but the wind was not helping.

And my shooting sucks.  There, I said it.

I would be embarrased to tell people about those groups (L.O.L.)..Actually .75" @ 100yds on a windy day is good info, because you can't predict the weather conditions when deer hunting..Knowing how well you do on still day tells us what the rifle does under ideal conditions, but shot on a windy day with some bullet drift, that's even better..Any rough guess about wind speed and what direction. For example were you shooting east to west with the wind out of the north?..

.

Would you mind letting us know what velocity you got with RE10x..I posted some data over at 68 Forums showing what I've been getting  with H322 and I've seen other's post what they get with RE10,but just curious because I want some RE10 and right now it's hard to find...

Winds were 10-15 MPH going left to right on the field.  I WAS going out today, but it's even windier and raining  I'm trying to find the best grouping reload I have, and having the wind blow things off is irritating.  I might have to hit the indoor range, but it's only 50 yards.  And I need a chrony.

Here are some groups I shot with H322, and RE 10X for comparison.  In top target, I am  using the 110 SPH bullet. SSA brass, CCI 41 primer, and COAL of 2.28".  This load is only going to be handled by the ARPerformance  rifles, and this one was his 12 twist. 3 groove stainless. I would not recommend that you try starting anywhere near 32 grains of H322.  This was carefully worked up over months, and pressure trace data was obtained at one of our 6.8 tests at Wild River Ranch.  I knew the load produced 60K pressure in that one barrel, therefore I deemed it safe for slow fire.   Start at 29, and work up in 0.3 or 0.5 grain increments.  If you remove the one called flyer ( I pulled that one at the end of a long day) , then the group measures 0.57"

Here's one shot with the 110 TTSX, which in my Cardinal Armory barrel, gets right up to 2700 FPS ( I clocked them to 2698) , but strangely, the 12/ 3 ARP stainless barrel, which reduces pressure so nicely, did not increase the velocity much from 16 to 20"  (it produced 2745) and was not nearly as accurate with this bullet.  It just goes to show you that each barrel / bullet/ charge weight / COAL will differ, so generalizations about powder do not always hold.  This is a feral pig load, and I don't use this barrel for pigs, only deer, so you can obviously see which load I use in this barrel.  Every deer I have ever shot with that SPH load was DRT, or ran only 30 yards with copious blood trail.  It performs exactly like my 6mm Remington. (except for the trajectory, of course) .  That is why I never ruled out H322 for 6.8.  I use it in some 5.56 prairie dog loads, so I am glad I also have a great 6.8 load using it.

Oops, sorry, forgot to add the TTSX / Re10X target through the Cardinal barrel.  I am sorry this is only three rounds, but at that time, these bullet were still selling for $1 each, ouch, so I shot small numbers of test rounds during load development.  I was using RE10X, H322 and H335 , and the accuracy was best to least in that order.  Re10X was also fastest by at least 40 FPS.  I figured that this was pretty much good to go for the time being to load 200 more, so I did.  They are all this accurate in Cardinal barrels.  I guess the bore diameter and this Barnes bullet are a perfect fit.

Those are some nice groups and good info too..What I find interesting is the velocity using the H322 is little lower and your'e pushing 2800fps with BL-C(2)..Thanks for the report ...

I'm with you on that about the wind..Once I settle on what I intend to use @ 100yds, I go out to my farm and shoot at targets @ 200 & 300yds..I try to duplicate actual hunting conditions and even if the wind is blowing, well that's part of.. I haven't at this point in time done any long distance shooting yet with 6.8, but will be soon..

HTR,

Very nice shooting, I don't think I'd want to shoot against you.. I appreciate the pics & all the testing you've done with the 6.8.. I do know from reading what you and others have been reporting is what prompted me to get mine...And for that I thank you...

I just tried the BLC w/some different loads to see how it worked.  I wouldn't recomend using it, as it was a very compressed load.  If you have a 18" or 20" bbl, it would work in a pinch tho.

I got the same barrel from Bison, what length handguards are those (and type) and what comp do you have at the end (thread type as well)?  Looks like what I am getting ready to build...

rc109a,

It's a rifle length YHM customizable, comes with 2 rails if needed..The gas tube is the "intermediate" length. So far Im very pleased with this upper. Here's a quote from Ben @ Bison about this compensator.

The Levang linear compensator is an interesting device. Problem is that they only make it for the .223/5.56 platform. I have modified one so that it will fit a 6.8 rifle with 5/8-24 muzzle thread. I will be testing next week and if all goes well I plan to offer them for sale. The tentative price (given the ballpark figure I was given by the machine shop) will be $40 each + shipping.
