This ammo shortage and risk of bad legislation is weighing heavy on the wallet.

I'm throwing in the towel and laying in lots of 5.45x39 while its cheap, and getting a  S&W 5.45 upper.

I think of this as a free option:if ammo gets regulated and costly, price/value of this stuff can only go up.  On the other hand its so cheap, if .223 and .308 come back down, the 5.45 price is likely to stay right about where it is right now.

Meantime I get cheap, fun shooting.

Win-Win situation, I think.

I was thinking the same thing, just don't want to put more money in to another magazine to make the rifle run 100%

If you're just now getting on the 545x39 wagon, you're 6 months late and a hell of a lot of dollars short.  I purchased a ton of ammo in this caliber (not literally, but over 12K rounds, which weigh somewhere around 35lbs per 1K) when it really was cheap...and I don't even have a gun in this caliber!  Now it's hard to find ammo and uppers.  I'll use it for bartering when the time comes (if it comes)...

Also true.  It's also still fun as hell...

You might be a LITTLE late but certainly not TOO late.

You can still buy 5.45 for $136K delivered.  (Or at least I could in January.)

5K rounds more than pays for your upper.

You're off base here. Go ahead and get a 5.45 upper, but ditching your 5.56 for it is sheer ignorance.

this.

i got a 5.45 upper because it's cheaper to shoot, and i've already got a 5.45 AK so i keep some ammo around.

they're lots of fun. clean them well and you'll have no problems.

I don't know whether or not you are contemplating giving up on 5.56.... thought you were just playing with words.

Hold on to your 5.56 uppers and ammo, and add the 5.45 upper and ammo.

How much was 5.45 ammo 6 months ago?

Excellent news!

That is one less soul looking for .223!

And what happens when the State Department decides to tie up imported ammunition?

I don't think there are any domestically manufactured 5.45 components you could fall back on to even reload.

Who sells 5.45 uppers and magazines?  How much are they?

Even if 5.45x39 ammo is no longer imported, the savings vs 5.56 of my current stockpile will have more than paid for the $560 upper and 6 mags I got for it.  If I completely run out of 5.45 ammo, I can simply rebarrel the upper to 5.56, 6.5, or 6.8, and get a new bolt

If ammo imports are banned 5.45 is not going to be the only caliber effected.

Giving up?  No way!

I prefer to view it as adding to the family:
