Recieved my 300 whisper barrel yesterday and finished up the rifle today. This rifle will be my feral hog/deer hunting gun. I will be testing some 130 and 150 gr hunting loads next week.

I am new to AR15s, not new to guns. Does the 300 upper fit 223 lowers? If so , do regular mags work?

Every thing interchanges with the stander AR15 . The only diffrence is a 300 whisper  barrel. That is what I like about the 300 whisper.

I was looking up different calibers earlier this morning, so this interests me. I am waiting on delivery of a Rock River CAR Elite with extras. NO doubt that I will want more. Please post some range results. Good luck on the hog hunts. Tell us how dead it makes em.

If anyone saw the Barda show on OLN last night.  He did the "old fashion" hog hunting.  2 dogs, 1 knife and dinner.  Pretty interesting.

This is a hog that I killed last year with a 300 whisper. That 300w was doing double duty as a 220gr, subsonic canned rifle and then resighted in with no can, 150grs sonic hog gun. So I decided to set up another 300 whisper in a lighter form for sonic non can use. That shot was 75 yards away, in the neck, dropped dead in its track. He was running thru a swamp and at the last second stopped to glance my way. Big Mistake.

I'm thinking about a larger bore upper for the same purpose.. hunting feral hogs... but I'm thinking about 458 SOCOM...  I have a buddy that is getting a 338 Mag rifle, and might be interested in the .338 Whisper... since he's getting a can for his .338 Mag, and could use it on a .338 Whisper upper, too...

I would be interested in seeing a ballistic table of 147 grain 9mm vs a .300 Whisper round.

TRG

I know that the 150gr does 2000fps and I hope with the 130gr I can get close to 2250/2300fps.
What can a +p 147 9mm do out a 16" barrel?

458 SOCOM ON HOGS IS AWSOME

I shot the first at 40 yards and the second hog on the run at 80 yards, it is a frickin HAMMER of god on piggies.

by the way my 458 was built by THE MAN himself Marty at www.teppojutsu.com

Marty is a stand up guy and quite an engineer...and he builds the uppers as a SIDE HOBBY!  Anyways hope ya enjoyed the info

where did you get the 300 wisper from just curious?

I use the 125g Sierra SP and get 2300+fps  (20.6g H110, 2.05 OAL) from a 16" barrel...

I use a .308 on Feral hogs and it has always worked good. I know it's probably sacrilege but I use a Saiga! It's a crummy $200 rifle with a Kvar KVO4 mount and a 4x Redfield, nothing fancy but it does good work and I don't worry about it getting beat up.

Hey Passgas (catchy!),

What sort of .300 /221 load did you use on the hog?  Specifically what bullet and how did it expand in the "pork"?  I've loaded 150 grain Nosler Ballistic tips to just a little shy of 2000 fps and was wondering how well they would expand in a whitetail.

Thanks,

Shal1

Cold-

I built his 300x221 barrel.
Seeing how he assembled it, I don't know why he wanted a front sight on it...

Randal

I have been to your site before, because I was interested in a auto loader in 204 ruger and I liked the 24" bull model you have in the complete upper section, what would run me in 204 ruger all tricked out like you have it on the page?

No Kidding, I just noticed Cold's picture now that you pointed it out.
I don't like rifles that bite, but the more I look at the 458, the more I think about getting one...

Maybe an Aimpoint is more appropriate?
I do have one sitting in an ARMS mount that I never use.
The whole idea of swapping back and forth between the ACOG and the Aimpoint when appropriate has never worked out for me.
I seem to do everything just fine with the ACOG and I never find myself wanting of the Aimpoint...

When I first ordered the barrel I wanted an A2  frontsight base but then I emailed you to make it a
flat front base which you said no problem but I guess things must got lost in the shuffel. I wanted the A2 style because I was going to set it up at first with red dot and iron backup. But these old eyes said to go with a 1.5x6 scope. I do not notice the front sight. I am happy with the way it is set up.

I used sierra 150 gr game kings loaded with H110 18.6gr(I have to look it up)
The bullet hit the neck with the front mushrooming about 2x and then the bullet turned sideways smashing one side flat. The hog did not move when hit. Dropped dead there. It has to do more with bullet placement more than anything else. Neck shot right behind the ear is where I aim. Chest shot and that hog will run. Year before last I killed 8 hogs all head/neck shots, last year 2. I have a new area to hunt but the hog signs are few. But things may change before the season starts. Funny how now I pass on shooting does for meat when I rather eat hog.

Not to swerve the thread too far but I have done alot of hunting and truth be told I would rather hunt hogs than most anything. My wife who is not a wild game eater loves feral hog meat. When the freezer starts to thin out I have special allowance to go kill some more. I have a new area to hunt this year too, feeders out and we are seeing alot of activity. Game cam is taking 800 pics a week.It should be a good "season"! Now if it will just cool off......

Thanks for the info!

I've read of people with T/C Contenders in .300 /221 using mostly 125 grain ballistic tips for deer hunting.  Based on your info, I feel good about my choice of 150 grain bullets.  I think our loads are pretty close... I know mine are hot.  The primer pockets loosen up after 2-3 firings.
