1-8 Twist Barrel?

Who would you folks recommend for a 1-8 twist barrel for a precision rifle?

I was thinking of a Mk12 pattern for length and weight.

I have a spare colt flat top upper I want to re-barrel.

NATO or Wylde chamber?

Lothar-Walther. Alternatively Rainier Arms. Both will have Wylde chambers.

I have a Noveske Recon in a 1:8 that does pretty good, wait you need a longer barrel right?

I have a 17" Lilja in 1/8 twist- they call it their M4 model, schematics of contour here. Wylde chamber.

It shoots 1/2 MOA with 69 gr Matchkings, but is pretty spendy at $465. I love it and plan on buying another.

I have a 20" Lothar-Walther LW50 barrel with Wylde chamber that is 1-8 twist and more accurate than I am.

What's your budget?

Lilja or have whatever you want made by Compass Lake or White Oak.

Do not put a NATO chamber on a precision rifle, either a Wylde or one of the hybrid/modified match/tactical chambers.

I could afford the $369 Lothar but see DPMS has Mk12 profile for half that.

I think Douglas made the Mk12 barrels but they are not offered on their web site.

I dont have a lower yet.

What would you all recommend for a lower that is worthy of a Lothar-Walther barrel?

I have a DPMS stainless steel in a 1/8. It puts the bullet where i want it to go.

LW50 will outlast the 416 DPMS barrel by a fair margin. That said you could have 2

I prefer Mega lowers; forged, excellent machine work and finish, and the logo isnt gay.

If you want a complete lower, BCM, LMT both are good choices.

what is your load recipe?

Lake City Brass, Remington 7 1/2 primers, 20 grains of 4198 (not my first choice, but what I had on hand) and 69 grain MatchKings.

In load testing, the faster loads shot better, so as things are easing a bit I'm going to try and find powder that's a bit more suited for the heavier bullets so I can get more velocity, see if I can tighten it up even more.

Shot with my FrankenGun 3G rifle and a Burris Fullfield Tac-30.

I have the DPMS Mk12, RRA upper and lower, Geissele SSA-E and it shoots 1/2 MOA.

The DPMS is hard to beat for the price.

My 16" would shoot under 1" with little effort using , of all things, Fed 55 gr. AE.

To save the cost of reducing the length and threading barrel, does anyone make an 18 inch 1-8 barrel with Mk12 profile (besides DPMS), or should I just look for a medium weight 20 inch?

Second question, is LW50 similar to 410 stainless?

IIRC, Compass Lake made the actual Mk12 barrels so presumably they would have the profile.

For the cost of a 20" at retail and then having it gunsmithed, you could just have a high grade custom barrel made the way you want it.

18" "SPR" barrels are profiled to meet MK12 barrel specs.

I have used that rifle length gas WOA barrel for two seasons of 3gun. It has served me well and shoots as good as my Krieger

I just looked at their web site and clicked around but cant find what kind of stainless they use?

416 or 410????

At the price with 18 inch length, Wylde chamber, and Mk12 profile/weight, and threaded muzzle I cant complain. Has everything but 1-8. WIth good quality bullets extra spin wont matter too much.

WOA gets their barrel blanks from Wilson so I'd be willing to bet they are 416 but you can call them to find out.

Here is another Wilson arms barrel that is 1/8 416r SS 18", 223 wylde, mid length gas but it is not a SPR profile

I was able to order WOA SDM 16in fluted barrel and get it in 1-8 twist for an extra $20. Their 20in SDM barrel comes stock with 1-8

I have one of those barrels and it is very accurate. It will shoot between .5 and 1.0 MOA with several loads if I do my part.

For my latest build I ordered it from White Oak. While their standard twist is 1-7 they were willing to get me a 1-8 custom order. However it took 8 months.

Just got my Brownells AR15 book. Looks like they have a little but of everything.

It looks like an 18 inch Mk12 barrel profile weighs about 16 ounces less than a 20 inch varmit heavy barrel. (2 pounds 9 oz vs 3.5 lb).

I recently bought a Wilson Combat 20" Stainless Steel "Super Sniper" barrel with 1:8 twist and Wylde chamber. It was $250 from PSA.

At 104 yards it put 5 shots into .864" with 55 grain M193 bullets and .856" with 69 grain SMK bullets. With a little load development I suppose I could reduce those groups even more. It stayed sub-MOA with the 69 grain SMK bullet out to 350 yards which is the maximum range I have available.

It's not a light weight barrel but I'm pleased with it. The crown is dished and doesn't accept screw-on accessories if that's important to you.

I will be attaching a SF muzzle brake and a supressor. My gunsmith can shorten and thread a barrel lfor $100, so that is an option.
