I hope that is the right term for rails like the MI Gen 2 SS and Troy TRX Extreme, if not someone please correct me.
I think I am going to step away from quad rails. Currently, I have a MI Gen 2 two piece free float on one of my rifles, but I don't really like it. I've been looking at modular rails an think they seem like a great option. I know I want a 11" or 12" length tube, with the ability to add rail sections as needed. The rifle the rail will go on is a 14.7" carbine with pinned A2 FH. |

|
And yeah... as far as I know, "Free Float Modular Rail" or any variation thereof describes these forearms well enough.

|
Well, DD Modular Float Rail...

In the "general" sense of the word modular; check out all the Keymod Rails out now.
Vltor, Noveske, KAC, PWS, Odin Works, Seekins Precision, etc... |

Yes, any where there is oval shape opening is where they go. I like the Troy rails but have been thinking about mi ss gen 2 or noveske bc they are lighter. Might also go w fortis rev, lil of both worlds |

Also, I am seeing two different Alpha rail models. One has circle holes and one has ovals. Is there any difference between the two? I like the one with oval holes better. |

Honestly just pick one! you really cant go wrong. I am all for the MI, I have the 15" mounted on my 16" and love it. very simple and solid.

You can fill those with Troy Squid Grips. The TROY/VTAC Alpha has the longer cooling slots. |
|
Ok figured it out. VTAC= ovals and the regular Alpha=circles.
Can rail sections be added after it is installed? It looks like they don't screw into the exterior of the rail, but have backers that mount on the interior? |
|
AR-4C mentioned Key-mod rails... check 'em out. Me want for next rifle.

|
|
At this point I'm definitely leaning towards the 11" or 13" Troy VTAC.

Noveske NSR hands down. I've had experience with the Alphas, and while they're good, I really like the polymer panels that can be installed directly to the NSR keeping a low profile. Besides, Keymod is pretty awesome and seems to be what the standard is going to be with all these companies adopting it.

I'm a fan of Samson evolution rails.. also had a Troy vtac that I liked

i recently switched to a diamondhead vrs-x and i really like it! the attention to detail is above any other ive seen, and its light.

Gah! It's torture visiting this site and these boards. You people and your 30-rounders... envious
RebelAR-15, you won't be making a bad choice with the Alpha rails (no matter which)! |

View Quote Yup the rails can be added with the handguard installed, but it's kind of a pain in the ass getting them lined up right. Much easier to do when everything is apart. |

At this point price is your determining factor. Tons of good recommendations thus far.

Rainier Arms Evolution Rail is QUITE nice. Uses stock barrel nut so no having to use proprietary crap. It's real light and comes with a QD socket, 2" rail, and 4" rail. They MAY still be in stock on their website. http://i39.tinypic.com/ogm8ih.jpg View Quote It's out of stock, but there is a notification feature. 12" Rainier Arms Evolution rail. I really like the Noveske NSR. Also out of stock but really nice, the Centurion Arms CMR. |

I like the EVO rails from Samson Mfg they are decently priced and use stock barrel nut. 556 Tactical has version of it that looks cool.

I'm interested in modular handguards as well. The Troys look nice, but are too heavy for me. The MI gen 2 SS look nice and are lightweight, but I've read complaints that they can become loose during use. MI tells folks to locktite the handguards to the barrel nut and I'm not really interested in doing that.
So that leaves the Samson or Rainier EVO or the Centurion DMR. Both are nice looking, lightweight rails. For those of you with these rails, have you had problems with the handguards working themselves off the barrel nut? |

troy alpha 13" is what I just used to finish a build.
mine works well with the 16" barrel I used and looks great. could only imagine how bad@ss is would look with your barrel. I love the feel and finish. works with a standard barrel nut if you stay away from the TRX model. +1 troy alpha 13 |
