I can't get past the obvious - the railed gas block that comes stock on the rifle is already 'pretty low' - lower than the stock handguard.

puhlease someone set me straight.

Will this thing fit under a longer free float quad rail or is it necessary to install the official "low profile" gas block?

Mine didn't. I put YHM low pro block on mine.
