but I'm going to be putting it back on. Do I need to use new taper pins? Should I just to be safe?

As long as they are not damaged you can re-use them.

reusable, provided they come out easy.

Key, the rifle barrel needs to held secure so all the force applied goes into the tapper pin.

I use a barrel blocks and a vice with a gallon bag to catch the pins as they fly out the other end. This method has never resulted in any damage to the gas block or tapper pins.

Okay I got the pins out easily enough. They're still good as new so no problem there. I did have to beat on the FSB with rubber mallet for several minutes, but now that's off too.
