i am assembling a dedicated 22 upper. i have a stripped m4 flat top, and a 9mm shell deflector, half port door kit. can i grind down the 223 shell deflector that is built into the upper?

Never saw it done but I don't see why not. I'm pretty sure it's solid aluminum all the way through to the inside of the receiver.

It might be simpler to sell that upper receiver and buy a 9mm upper receiver.

Does the shell deflector not fit over the .223 shell deflector?

I ask because the shell deflector on my CMMG looks like it just fits over the existing shell deflector.

RRA 9mm A2 uppers are already in the configuration you are going to make.....i have done things of a similar nature that you want to.... and it has always been cheaper and less hassle to just buy it right the correct way from the start.

A $60 spikes blem upper is a lower cost upper to try modifications on so it wont
be that big of a loss if you trim to deep

it turns out that a rra 9mm ejection port door kit, with 9mm deflector fits a m4 flat top upper just fine. no need to grind anything to fit. looks a little strange having a 223 shell deflector, and a 9mm shell deflector side by side.....but its functional.

it looks just lke this sierra upper from cmmg:

I guess I should have said in front of instead of over.

one thing that has me puzzled. if i install the port door kit before the barrel, the upper will not fit into my clamshell upper vise block. if i install the barrel, and barrel nut first, i cant install the port door normally.

what are my options? is this normal?

Sure you can.  There is a tiny C-clip on the axis pin for the port door.  Remove it and slide the pin into the spring, door, and deflector and replace the C-clip.  Easy.

Grinding the old deflector off is going to look like shit, though.

a rra 9mm upper is 175 retail.

spikes has blem m4 uppers for 60 bucks.

kinda hard for me to justify over 100 bucks, just to have no forward assist, and no 223 deflector.

times are hard. saving money is the difference between me getting to build this rifle, and going without.

It's a RRA 9mm upper. Years ago RRA put out some that were machined for the gas tube.
ADCO will drill a gas tube hole in a 9mm upper.
