Haven’t seen anyone asking about these yet. Anyone have one of the MagPul UBR - Utility/Battle Rifle stocks? Really looking into getting one for my YHM Black Diamond Specter. Any feedback form some of ya'll out there would be appreciated. Pros, Cons, Love/Hate and why?

Very nice stock. A little pricey but built very strong and has great features. From a 16" middy to a 20" rifle, I think they are a great choice.
Very sturdy with a rock solid lock up. The downside is that it's relatively heavy, although that may not be a bad thing. It really helps to balance the rifle out, if your rifle is front heavy due to rails and equipment.
I have one on my AR-10 and love it.
Same as above ......buit like a tank and solid. Cons the price! |
Out of place on lightweight builds, and I prefer the preproduction type dual-sided QD cups; still waiting to see MagPul unveil their ASAP-ish ambi-1pt sling solution for it (closest right now is the ASAP or IKH Slap and the ERGO F93).
If you have an ACOG, you want a UBR, as it's the best solution out there. For Recce, SPR, or precision rigs they've great, and they honestly should be on (more) issued weapons Otherwise, effing fantastic, and the price isn't that bad if you're the type who considers cost of a weapon system in terms of service life. |
Pros:
Locks up solid Instant LOP with screw stops Consistent cheek weld Looks badass 2 built in QD points User removable storage doors Weight (depends on build) Cons: Pricey Weight (depends on build) I liked that it is a heavy stock, which helped balanced my 18'' SPR build. The CTR I had before made my rifle front heavy. YMMV |
Thanks everyone! My rifle is a self built Yankee Hill Black Diamond specter. Center of ballance is dang near the front take down pin so the heavy stock will most likly make her back heavy. But that's okay, as it will get most of its use from prone on a bi-pod shooting two-three hundred yards. Thanks again, I'm sold.
Have been looking at them. How adjustable is the cheek piece. Are there any parts for higher or wider contact?

It's more of an entry-length stock and weighs 3 times as much as a M4 stock. It looks cool, but not for $260

I've used the UBR and PRS and strongly prefer the PRS. It's all personal preference and depends on the gun, though.

IMO the sexiest stock out there but pretty pricey to put on an already built rifle. When building a lower you save some dough not having to buy receiver extension, fancy end plates, sling attachment etc. Since they can be had for 230 shipped, I like to think of them as a 160$ stock with 70$ worth of stuff I'd have to buy anyway.

$200 for OD or foliage green at DSG Arms. I love mine and can't wait to have an upper to go with it!

It's a bit heavy and expensive, but is solid. It has positive adjustments, a good cheek weld and balances a heavy barreled rifle nicely. Plus it just looks damn good. I've got one on my LR-308 and am very happy with it.
it's supposed to be heavy as it was intended for front heavy guns to help balance them out, and fill the role between a precision rifle stock like the PRS and a basic carbine stock like the CTR
expensive and overpriced i don't quite understand... the VLTOR emod kit is $190 for a carbine receiver extension and a stock with some added storage. the new VLTOR A5 is like $225-230 and that's just a longer receiver extension and special spring/buffer. the LMT SOPMOD is $200 by itself and like $260 as a kit. at $250, the UBR is a decent price. |
There's no such thing as overpriced. An item is worth what folks are willing to pay for it. Last I checked, Magpul has had zero issues selling UBRs.
More than you want to spend? Don't buy one. |

VLTOR and LMT SOPMOD are also overpriced IMHO. They add storage compartments and the VLTOR tears off facial hair for a premium. At least the UBR looks sexy for $260. Again I use a standard 6-position M4 stock for my 24" HBAR. This rifle weighs about 12-13 lb empty with optics. I don't have any problems with the balance, it's just a heavy gun. No one is trying to dissuade anyone from buying the UBR, I'm just saying the $260+ price tag is steep for a piece of furniture. |
From the one I picked up it seemed like a well built well thought out stock, but it is a brick (durability). that being said, if you decide to pull the trigger on one aimsurplus has FDE, OD, and Foliage green in their closeouts section for $200 and (dont hold me to it) free shipping.

I think folks are not using the economics 101 definition of overpriced; rather they are shortening "the stock doesnt provide enough additional benefit over a less expensive stock to justify the price in my opinion" to "it's overpriced". I tend to agree. |

Exactly. The UBR replaces the entire assembly except the buffer and buffer spring. Going by MSRP: Colt M4 stock kit $200 BCM M4 stock kit $85 CTR $95 receiver extension $35 end plate and castle nut $10 buffer $25 spring $5 $170 UBR $260 buffer $25 spring $5 $290 SOPMOD kit $265 I am looking at purchasing a UBR for my next rifle. I don't think $215 (DSG) is overpriced at all. Dustin |

I recently paid $80 for my Gen1 SOPMOD stock (new) and $56 for the BCM receiver extension kit. Happy as a clam. I realize its MSRP is higher, but to be honest, I'd never buy a stock in that price range. I've bought all these used just to check them out and never found any of them so much better than a standard carbine stock that it would justify the price (although the CTR I liked) so I sold them. On my 308 I run a "hook" stock. Shoot, prior to the SOPMODS I get when I can find them cheap, I used a regular old CAR stock, so I am a cheap bastard; not that big on keeping up with the joneses

That includes the stock, buffer tube, spring, and buffer. |

Did anybody say HEAVY!
Whatever is in it, is denser than LEAD! It is one solid stock though. |

There are some available on Ebay right now for $215.50 shipped. AIM Surplus has them for 200 but I don't know if that includes shipping and no black colored ones. My SPR build is complete as soon as my Brown Santa rolls in tomorrow. Yes they are heavy but the concrete table at the range isn't afraid.
I got a black one from AIM's $200.01-shipped deal, awhile back.
Haven't gotten to use it yet, though. When I bought it, I was still living in NY. Meaning I had to either use it on pre-ban lower (I don't have one) or pin it in place. Obviously I wasn't going to pin a $200 stock in place. But now that I'm in SC, I can use it. Just haven't decided what to use it on. Just another reason to build another rifle, right? FWIW, I don't regret the $200 price tag in the least, and I haven't even gotten to shoot with it yet. |

Weight wise, how does it compare to the weight of an A2 or a Magpul PRS?
