Hello,

I know that if your upper is chambered for 5.56 it can shoot .223 but a .223 can't shoot 5.56 and I understand why.  My question is, does the same hold true for barrels?

Thanks in advance.

Both cartridges run a .224 bullet so the barrels are identical.

It is the chamber part of the barrel that is at issue.  The bore of the barrel is the same and the upper receiver itself is the same.

Im sorry, I wasnt thinking right when I posted that.  lesm is completely right, the barrel is what matters with the chamber issue.

So you can't shoot 5.56 in a .223 chambered barrel?

No, the first few inches of the barrel is the chamber.  So i your barrel is chambered for .223 you cannot shoot 5.56.

It is not ah, recommended.  .223 chambers have a short throat that can cause the pressure to exceed the design pressure when fired using .5.56 NATO ammo.
