I'm having 2nd thoughts on my spec to install an end cap on the lightweight YHM Free float forearm.    I was  informed that the benefit of a ltw free float is that it doesn't affect barrel harmonics and accuracy and the ltwt aspect helps with cooling.  I asked a YHM tech and they said that they install the end caps on all their rifles that they build.

My thinking that the end cap would help keep gunk out of the front end.  It has vent holes, so can still help cooling.  This is gonna be a NJ legal AR, so permanent muzzle brake and I'm worried if I ever need to remove/replace the forearm that I won't be able to take it off.  The front sight won't be able to slip over the  brake.  Don't know if I'll be able to remove it by removing the barrel from the receiver and sliding it off from that end.

anyway, does anyone have an end cap installed on their free float forearms and is it worth it or not?

I might still be able to remove it from the spec before they proceed with the build.

Here is a photo of the end cap.

I am no expert, but I do own a rifle length yhm rail.  I chose not to put one on and haven't noticed any negative effects.... I don't see end caps on any of the higher end rails such as Larue or Daniel Defense.

I think it is purely an aesthetic thing

From the YHM website: "Use these screw-in end caps" So they are removable.

I have never met anyone who ever had a problem with sticks and twigs getting stuck in the open end of their forearm. It seems a solution to a non-existent problem.

yes they are removeable, if you can remove your perm attached muzzle break

I've got an end cap and they seem pretty light.  You could always unscrew it and "carefully" cut it into two pieces if you later wanted to remove it.

With a perm attached muzzle break "brake" you wouldn't be able to remove the forearm anyway.
I have one on the one I have.
If removing it is an issue get the Daniel Defence Omega railed forearm.

I have the cap on my YHMs and it is removable. It just threads in there no problem. I put mine on for no practical reason .....just looks. To me thats about all its good for anyway. But it does clear the perm. phantom FH on the end of my barrel. no need to remove the FH to take the handguard off with the end cap in place. A larger dia. FA or MB may present a problem.

But there are two choices for end caps.  Different inside diameters.

Actually its not two inside diameters of the rail. The difference is the size of the hole that the barrel slides thru.

Have a cover on mine for the looks, too.

How do you guys like the YHM rails?  My builder uses the ltwt free float - the one with huge holes between the rails.

Right, that's why I didn't say inside diameter of the rail.

Took a look at the DD Omega Rail FF.

How does that bolt onto the receiver and is the other end open like a typ. FF?
The photos on the site shows  an M4 handguard cap between the FSB and the Rail.

You can see this on the photos from the DD site:

I like their "Tubes" as I don't need or want rails. There is nothing I want hanging on the front of my gum, but YMMV.
Their tubes do everything I ask them to do. Very good, possibly the best, value for your money.

if it helps, i bought one and did not get the cap.  i have the standard fsb so i wouldnt see most of it anyway.  as mentioned already, most other FF rails dont have caps

purely for looks

when i get my upper back from adco i can post a pic, but by then it would be too late for you to decide

The end cap makes for a cleaner, more professional looking installation.
If you are using a standard front sight tower and a permanenet muzzle brake the end cap isn't coming off no matter what size brake you use unless you cut it in two pieces using a Dremel or Foredom tool and a heavy duty cut-off wheel.
