Pull the delta ring back and you can remove the plastic handguards. This is easier to do if you remove the upper from the lower, you can get a better grip on the delta ring if the magazine well isn't interfering with the palm of your hand.

There are alot of "tacked" threads with quite a few detailed instructions you could probably find this there.

Get a hanguard removal tool, makes it a hell of a lot easier. Just insert it as shown as use the tongs to pull back the delta ring

+1 on the handguard tool.

Otherwise, have your friend help you out.   Plant the stock on the ground with the muzzle pointed up, then YOU pull down (and hold) on the delta ring and your buddy takes off the handguards.   (make sure the gun's unloaded first).

On the really tough ones, I pull down on the delta ring with both hands and (with an allen wrench between my teeth) then snag the closest handguard half with the wrench (through a vent hole).  Works like a champ.

Did that make any sense?  Haven't had my coffee this morning.

I would start with a hacksaw and cut them rascals off there,

Since you are a Marine you do it the pussy way.

I am Army strong so I pull down the delta ring with my pecker and then use my hands to remove the guards.
