So, now that I've fallen in love with shooting my AR-15 this year, I was thinking about using it for deer season this fall. However, here in Minnesota 5.56mm isn't legal for big game; bullet diameter must be 6mm or higher. I've invested most of my fun money into reloading components, magazines, optics, etc, so high-priced (over $500) uppers are out.

Does the 6.8 SPC use the same bolt as the 5.56mm? If that were the case, I could just buy an SPC upper without a bolt and bolt carrier and use the one I have in my 5.56mm upper, right?

Both the 7.62x39, and 6.8SPC use a different bolt.

Get the 6.8SPC.

Some more info:

6.8 SPC has about 1,500 ft/lbs to 1,700 ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle
6.8 SPC matches the trajectory of .223 out to about 450 yards.
250 yard shots with no hold-over and plenty of energy for deer are quite standard with the right load.
110 grain Sierra Pro Hunters are the most common hunting bullet used, and it is more accurate than you need for hunting deer.

a buddy of mine bought a dpms 762x39.

he is having fits making it run. light primer strikes, no decent magazines available<the dpms mags are plastic junk>.

i was interested in one until he got his.

i was also looking into the 6.8 but have been talked out of by 2 seperate vendors. both stated the lugs on the bolt have a higher rate of failure due to being thinner. I was told 3500 rounds is about the average bolt life for one of those.

You have been BS'ed. They were probably talking about 6.5 Grendel, which is known to have such problems.

I tell you what , I will put a LIFETIME guaranty on any 6.8 bolt I sell. If you or anyone ever has lugs break, I will replace it at no charge to you.

You have to stop it, I Have 2 lowers sitting around. I think I might get into the 6.8 after the move. I told myself no more calibers, but i cant take it anymore.

6 months ago I sold my FAL because ammo was going up. I got 2 uppers in 7.62x39 for the price of ammo and availability and I am glad I did. I cannot get any Wolf 223 at the gun shows but plenty of 7,62. Tell your buddy to increase hammer tension on the springs. Both my uppers run 100% an my 16" runs 100% on Full Auto. Both shoot under 2" with Wolf Classic HP. Eddie

I guess I should go tell my bolt that he should have broken 4000 rounds ago. Are you sure your friend wasn't referring to 6.5Grendel bolts?
