Why did the Army Marksmanship Unit select the Daniel Defence railed handguard for their DMR/SDM rifle?

Why not? It is a great handguard and with the wieght of the DM Douglas barrel the lightness of the DD rail will be nice. I also think that the oval shape of the handguard makes for a more comfortable hold on the weapon. I do notice they went with a steel barrel nut rather than the aluminium one.

Short answer?  It did what the solicitation asked for, at the best price.

Edited to add an inside Joke:

It could be that DD has better looking topless waitresses at their Carib island R&R center that they take procurement folks to for "Contract Negoiations"
