I don't know if it's the best lower or not, but I have been eyeing the LMT Defender Lower with SOPMOD stock.

There are a lot of really good lowers out there.

The ones I've seen and like are Mega, Stag, RRA, and DPMS.

The ones I've spent my money on?  Mega.  The consistent quality, finish, and machining keeps me coming back.

Best lower?    Price is no object?

JP Rifles CTR-02
Socom Diamond...

As for milspec?

LMT = LMT, Lauer, DSA, PWA, Eagle, KAC
CMT = Stag, RRA, High Standard, Noveske, (new) Century, Global Tactical, CLE, S&W, MGI
LAR = LAR, Bushmaster, Ameetech, DPMS, CMMG, Double Star, Fulton

Not sure about the 'mil-spec' aspect of these, but the Mega Machine Shop stuff is high quality:

MMS = Mega, GSE, Dalphon, POF, Alexander,
Sun Devil = Sun Devil forged billet receivers
Superior = Superior Arms
JVP = Double Star, LRB

I'd probably try to avoid:

Olympic = Olypmic, SGW, Tromix, Palmetto, Dalphon, Frankford, (old) Century

Personally, avoid any Olympic cast, and Vulcan/Hesse recievers...

I say the best lower is the cheapest one that is perfectly mil-spec. There are tons of them out there in the AR market now.. they all work the same.

Of the current crop, I'd say SunDevil without any reservations.  Truly remarkable, very clean lines, made from billet and strong.

For the best in reliability most firearms instructors recommend in this order:

1. Colt
2. CMT
3. Bushmaster

IMHO any brand except for a few (look at the Troubleshooting forum), as long as they are within blueprint tolerance will be acceptable for us civilians.

I recently purchased a Sun Devil lower and I'm extremely impressed with it. I hope to get a couple more this summer.

No, they didn't mentioned LMT but just ask any Navy SEALS or SF soldiers, they got them.

It seems like most of the lowers are all pretty good quality these days.  Any consensus on what lowers are not a good buy?

I have 1 bushmaster and 1 RRA

I like them both, the RRA is a bit tighter when fitting in an upper though.

I can vouch for the quality of these; got one from Talon Arms a while back and have been VERY satisfied with it. Fits my Armalite upper better than the factory lower does. Very reasonable price for a complete lower w/ SOPMOD stock too
