It has been awile since I have bought lowers.

What companies are making milled lowers right now?

I don't know a whole lot about the manufacturing of receivers but all the receivers I know of are all forged.  But I also have no clue what milling is so my post probably makes zero sense and I am just wasting everyones time

SunDevil lowers are billet aluminum lowers.  IMO the best lower made at present.  Very, very clean lines, low shelf and there's no teflon on it in case you'd like to finish it with Norrell's or other such finish.

All AR receivers are Milled

Your thinking of lowers milled from Billet
Most are Milled from forgings
and some low end one are milled from castings.

SOCOM is out of business and JP only sells their billet lowers as complete guns.

Olympic used to have titanium lowers.  I would assume those are machined from billet.

WHY would anyone want a lower machined from a billet instead of a forging?  Forged lowers start out life as a billet of aluminum that is put into the forging press.  Two things are accomplished during the forging process: 1) the general external profile of the receiver is formed 2) and most importantly the grain structure of the aluminum is compressed and made more uniform.

I can understand that the SOCOM billet lowers are neat because of their different external profile, but WHY on earth would you want a lower that has the same lines as a forged lower, but is made from a billet?  You're merely getting an aluminum lower with inferior metallurgy when compared to a forged lower.

I'm also wondering the same thing as JoshNC.

IIRC, the Sun Devil lowers are made from a 6061 billet which is also lower quality than the 7075T6 forgings that are used for most lowers.

I guess if the Sun Devil lowers were $50 each then I might see the value but with the current pricing for SD lowers you will be paying more money for product made of lower quality material.

Why would you want to pay more for a Sun Devil lower than a Stag lower?

I think of it as:

Milled = Machined

Forged = Forged

Ok so Stag makes the best lower for around $100?

Exactly.  And the only "Dimensional Inconsistencies" would be in non critical areas.  The Fire Control group holes are still machined the same way as a Cast, Forged, or Billet receiver.

You're not getting anything over a forged receiver, but the price is competetive, so whatever.

Hmmm... everybody making an AR reciever besides the AR-180 and clones? That's stamped, but everything else is milled.
