I have never had anything Vulcan so I can not give you firsthand knowledge about them but from what I have heard around here you might want to think twice about buying Vulcan.  Supposedly complete junk.

If memory serves me right Vulcan Arms is located in Ingh MN or Michigan or some place up Nort' my point is Vulcan has the same address as Hesse Arms... run a thread about popular opinion on Hesse Arms and see what happens ! There will be a few wounded who sound off ... and many more that dont. BEWARE ...
I just read somewhere that the joy of a great deal wears off faster than the disappointment of poor quality.

Here is the final resting place for Hesse/Vulcan stuff:

I have several Vulcan lower receivers. They are excellent, full spec. and sub-contracted from the same forgers as everybody else. They have a nice "soft" charcoal grey color and no ghey logo's.

Vulcan = Hesse = Shit.     Avoid doing business with JoeKen too they are the plague as dealers go.

That is the biggest bunch of BS I have ever read about Vulcan.  There is no way their lowers are made by the same people as "everybody else" unless they buy the QC rejects.

Vulcan aka Hesse does NOT make quality products...

However, they do re-SELL (someone else makes the thing) a composite ('kevlar') lower that has recieved some good reviews...

So, with all these helpful suggestions, should BigBearHunter buy a Vulcan Arms lower?

Sounds like that's what he wants. Remember he started off with I am looking at getting a vulcan arms lower,so whatever. Why he doesn't get a RRA,Stag,Eagle,CMMG,LMT,,Bushamster or even a DPMS lower is beyond me. Caveat emptor.

I say buy the lower if the price is right.  The shop I went to had the Vulcan for $115 or a Bushmaster for $200.  Easy choice considering I am building a blaster gun.  My Vulcan lower went together real easy and functions fine.  For the money, I'd buy another.   Like most companies, they must outsource the lowers from well known reputable lowers makers.

As for their uppers, I would say stay far away from these.  I am under the impression they use  substandard/rejected parts for these.  And are assembled by people who don't give a shiite.

If you want an inexpensive quality lower consider buying an Essential Arms forged lower.  Stag, Mega, Stinger are also good.  I used to have 2 of the cast lowers with no problems.  A good number of my co-workers have started builds since the ban lifted with the E.A. lowers and all of us have been well satisfied with their lowers and service.

If you look around, it should be possible to find stipped Stag lowers (which are great quality) for not much more than $100, so why buy a brand with a really shitty repuation like Hesse?  Sure, it MIGHT be fine, but why even take the chance?

Sure there are others that are similarly priced and have a better reputation.  I paid $115 off the shelf + NYS sales tax.  Nobody around here where I live (lower NY) carries stripped lowers other than Bushmaster, which was $200 off the shelf.

I recently picked up some of Dennys lowers I had shipped to a different dealer.  $115 + transfer fee $50 for each + NYS sales tax.   You guys that are lucky to live in areas where the FFL charges less should count your blessings.  That is the going rate for dealers in NY.

I have owned Colts, Bushmasters, EAs, Olympics, Pac West, SGW, Lauer, and Gristmill.  Despite the undisputed fact that Hesse sucks the big one, their Vulcan lowers are the exception probably cause they don't make these themselves.  Believe me, I looked over their lower real carefully for a few months before I finally bought one.  Besides, it was for building a cheap blaster anyway.

If he charged you a transfer fee and sales tax, he was ripping you off, btw.

I use to think that too.  But this is New York, home of Democratic Socialist.  Everything possible is taxed and taxed again.  The dealer I used for Dennys stuff only charged the tax on the transfer fee itself.  Others may charge tax on the full "value" of a gun transferred from a private individual.  Then some only charge the transfer fee which I was told is incorrect.  Starting last year, our state income forms now ask about sales tax we owe for out of state Internet purchases.

So given the fees and taxes added on, the Vulcan lower is not a bad deal if the price is right.  I would not recommend this lower if I thought it were crap.  If given a choice of CMT, RRA, or Vulcan for same price out the door, I probably wouldn't buy the Vulcan.  bigbearhunter wants one cause he can get a good deal on it.  I say go for it.

Most people will tell you Vulcan/Hesse is junk. Most people would be right. If you do a search of this site you will find a lot of information on the Vulcan/Hesse stuff. The best answer is to avoid it.

For not much more money, if any at all, you can have a Stag lower or an RRA lower and be much happier. You can get into a stripped Stag lower for under $100, more like under $90, and complete lowers start around $150 or so.

And lotso of good Colorado dealers have them so you won't have to go far.
