Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Handguard Picatinny Rail Question

Ok, I have noticed that there seem to be 2 major types of these rails on handguards.  One the first, the rails look like ladders, and the other, the center of the rail is milled out, more like teeth. Why the difference? All I can think of is that the ladder type would snag less and be comfortable to grip. Is there a real functional difference?

Having the middle/center of the rail removed reduces the weight . How much I don't know.
Thats all I can figure.  I don't see them getting snagged on much of any more than the others.

Bare rails will never be comfortable to grip unless you are wearing good, sturdy gloves.
